This commission placed a fiery lava dragon into the Starfall mountains of the graphic novel series. Any excuse to work with water and waterfalls makes a good day for me. I tried to increase the 'wetness' and transparency of the liquid in the foreground pool by revealing the stony texture of the pebbles beneath - partly painted in from a photograph I took of a similar aquatic view at Cedar Falls one isolated spring morning. I'm still not satisfied with my handling of water - I want to look at a picture and be able to smell it, to get thirsty just from seeing how lifelike the liquid is. Not there yet, but getting closer I think. Oh, yeah, and the dragon was a blast to draw! I haven't drawn a big scaly dragon in forever, I had forgotten how fun it is. This dragon’s name is Houki-Boshi, and the rider is Meian. These characters and their design belongs to Cornelius van Richten and his art who can be found at: http://corneliusvanrichten.deviantart.com/

I'd say I don't really go along with the idea of persons riding dragons (especially with reigns!). The exception is a strong bond of friendship between rider and dragon and the dragon allows the person to ride him (but only if the dragon is equal to the rider and can refuse afterwards)...
But I got to admit that this picture is well drawn and neatly coloured, so I will fav it.

Absolutely stunning picture, the contrast of colors makes you look for the details
the water is beautifully colored but it seems like it has a heavy look to it, like its more viscous than fluid, like the light accents need to be sharper instead of rounded as they taper...not sure thats correct, just seems to be

Hmm really awesome. This pose for dragons kinda popular today, I think this is the 3 rd back shoot dragon I saw this week on the net.
Water hmm I found it awesome. It so clean I can see the rock in the riverbed. Also it has a nice flow effect and it even steams. The waterfall is awesome to. I would be satisfied with it for sure. But for you I can add to things to try out if you want to experiment with it. Water reflection and what comes of it. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2009954 My last attempt for water reflection. Basicly it's nothing more than a rip of the the background and characters colors. Specially handled cut to gather and warped on the water surface. Was hard to do, but you may can try it out next. The problem tough is that flowing water like the river don't realy reflects.

Well it's looking great thus far! Awesome composition and color! The water is looking wonderful too, but I agree with your line of thinking. I'd say try adding very small amounts of white speckling in the crests of the water along where the light source would strike the tips. It doesn't take much, but a little bit of pure white speckling should do the trick.
man, imagining being in that scene sucks you in <_<
and the purples, marine vegitation, and OH SHIT WATER MOUNTAIN makes me wish this place was real D:
As for constructive criticism, I suppose the crashing of the water on rocks could use a little more sprinkle
otherwise this piece is entrancing @____@

oooooooh there are more pages of your art??? I really hate the way it is set up on here. It would be SOOO Nice to at least see a page 1 of 5 or something to know what page you are on, and that the person you are viewing indeed has more art lol. UGH, oh well. This is simply amazing! I love the angle, and the perspective of the whole piece. You guys really outdid yourselves with this one! LOVE!
The art world needs more interesting dragon designs like this, everything I want to say has already been mentioned by others lol.
The perspective, the colour balance of both warm and cool and the sense of what lays beyond the mountains and where the character will go next..just stunning.
You really deserve a pat on the back!

Yep! That's the one. Cool, didn't realize we had some more furs in the area I didn't know. I love Cedar falls and I try to drag my friends out there when I can. Some of them are a bit lazy though and don't wanna hike much. Its an inspiring place, I just never thought I'd find someone on here use if as inspiration. Its a small world.
