And now comes the time to introduce the hero. I wanted Matthias's music to have a brave and, well heroic, sound, but also a sense of innocence and naïvité to it. In writing this piece, I took some inspiration from some of Howard Shore's themes from the Shire in his score for The Lord of the Rings, as well as some classic folk songs like Down by the Sally Gardens.
Sound samples used:
EWQL Hollywood Orchestra
EWQL Ra (frame drum)
Mixed in Reaper v. 5.34

The thing about EWQL is that it has varying levels of sampling. EWQL has reverb presets, which is what I use, but they also have more complete libraries that use samples recorded further away from the instruments, which would produce a more realistic reverb. Ideally, I'd get better reverb by loading those kinds of samples that use various mic positions, but that's unfortunately a little out of my budget as a hobbyist composer. Not that I'm just trying to blame the equipment. Part of the "plastic" nature, also, is owed to my own inexperience with instrumentation when I originally wrote the piece and my current newness to EWQL. When I have more time, I'll most likely experiment with both dynamics and editing the instrumentation of the piece (especially the woodwinds, which I think are the biggest contributor to that plastic sound).
