I can kind of see the headspace: overwhelmed with grief and making a stupid mistake, then maybe a "fuckit I'm not carving a third tombstone" moment. I mean, I think this is the second son he's lost. Also being his son, not something he'd want to ask someone else to do, even if there was another around that could do it. Or something like that.
