Here's a photo from yesterday's hike, heading from the Lake of the Clouds overlook in the Porcupine Mountains Wildnerness in Michigan. We're taking the Carp River trail west from the overlook. I think this photo is the best of all that I took that gives a sense of perspective of the landscape here. Bet most of you didn't know that Michigan had some real topography up north!
That's Wizard in the photo, showing off his new packs, which we are training him to use to carry extra gear for us, and eventually get his Pack Dog title.

Both this time of year and again in the fall. I went backpacking in the Porkies in October way back in 1992 or 1993, and it was gorgeous. Most of the deciduous trees in this shot are sugar and red maples, which turn wonderful colors in autumn. This time of year you still have a lot of trees budding out near the Lakes, so the trees still have a variety of pastel shades that haven't yet deepened to the full green of summer.
