Between my last commission and school work (mostly school work) I toyed around with the idea for a fan character for Sly Cooper (because yes, I'm still not over that). This ref sheet is extremely sloppy because I whipped it up in like 15 minutes. It only looks good because I'm a master at lying with my brush strokes.
I haven't made a fancharacter in like 10million years it seems?? So I figured it was past due.
Jeremy is one of Arpeggio's goons on his airship from Sly 2. He's based off a glitch I routinely received in the game where if you killed a guard by fire they would sometimes respawn elsewhere still on fire. So there would be a dude nonchalantly walking around with a small flame on them. Jeremy would probably be that dude.
I kept the general proportions and attire in sync with the toucan guards from the level but with some flair. I must have been super dumb because I never realized the guards were toucans. So I assigned Jeremy an actual toucan species and colored accordingly. Fiery-billed aracari seemed relevant because I'm hilarious.
His Muteness:
• He's physically mute though I haven't worked out what caused it (for now we can go with the simple "damage to vocal chords" theory). He was born mute.
• He does, however, have a syrinx, which is what allows birds to make noises and "talk". So he can make bird noises and sometimes "create" words if need be, like a parrot.
• Specifically he makes two distinctive toucan noises: a croak and a rattle. He communicates with people by using his croak to mean variations of "no" and the rattle for "yes".
• He knows sign language and would obviously prefer using that but rarely do the people around him know it.
His Accident-Proneness:
• He doesn't have the best of luck and routinely hurts himself. He is most prone to incidents involving fire or explosions.
• For obvious reasons, he isn't allowed to have any weapons or a jetpack like the other guards. So he's not really a main fighting guard but more of a maintenence man or spotter.
• Despite all this, he rarely gets seriously injured. Nothing worse than low-grade burns, cuts, or the occasional sprain. He's magically never gotten any broken bones or burns so serious it required hospitalization.
• His feathers are always regrowing after incidents so it's extremely common for him to have pin feathers with noticeable white shaft casings (note one of his tail feathers on the ref). Blood feathers are occasionally prone to breaking on him, so he's usually carrying a small container of corn starch on him to stop the bleeding (owwie).
• He gets new uniforms every now and then but they don't stay clean long before looking like this.
Personality:
He's a caring individual with a strong sense of empathy for others which ends up causing him to be a massive pushover and easy to manipulate. While he doesn't necessarily assume everyone is his friend, he assumes there is good in everyone and that they don't intend to do things maliciously intentionally. To an extent this is true of his situation; his fellow guards don't necessarily want him to get hurt... they just don't want to do the hard work so they make him do all the dangerous stuff. He's very good at his job all things considered and takes pride in that. Of course, being in a group that is very aware they are partaking in criminal activity, his moral compass is rather gray. He tries not to think about it: it's a job after all.
Misc Facts:
• Despite his mishaps, he's kept on as a worker because he does all the things no one else wants to do. If you need someone to brave the hazards of checking places filled with fire, lasers, bombs or tight squeezes... he's your man. His coworkers are happy to have him on for this reason alone.
• He's exactly 4 feet 2 inches tall.
• He's extremely good at poker.
• He plays the electric guitar as a side hobby.
