Here's another slight diversion from the first Redwall novel, but I think a worthwhile one. One of the most fun and entertaining parts of the series is that group of perilous hares known as the Long Patrol, an army of adventurers that travels from the slopes of Salamandastron across Mossflower wood righting wrongs and bringing justice. They always have an air of high adventure surrounding them and I wanted a piece that showcased it. As Redwall's resident Basil Stag Hare is a veteran of the Long Patrol, expect to hear more of this theme in the future. I had a lot of fun writing this piece.

I'm really enjoying this whole series, Redwall was my absolute favourite literary series when I was younger and one of my biggest creative influences, so it's really great to hear such a talented composer doing justice to it. This was one of my favourite movements so far, I really liked the softer bit in the middle, for me it emphasised the gallantry and gentleness of the Long Patrol hares when they're not at war, great violin/viola/cello/whatever it was melody as well :) the more aggressive sections were excellent as well, but if it were up to me I'd use some more military percussion like a floor tom/field drum rather than the timps. Still loved it though!
(Btw if you plan to do more from the other novels I'd love to hear something based around Taggerung or The Pearls of Lutra - otters were always my favourite characters :P)

There is actually a field drum in the faster sections. I didn't want to bring too much attention to it (I felt like those parts of the piece were busy enough already), but it is there underneath the orchestra.
And it's funny you should mention Pearls of Lutra - I got the meter for the main melody (the one you hear on the bassoon and bass clarinet near the beginning) from a poem about the Long Patrol that I believe actually came from Pearls of Lutra (don't remember for sure - it's been quite some time since I read it).
