In hindsight, Card shouldn't have left George in charge of setting up the surprise party. While my loving boyfriend kept me busy with romantic walks in the sunset, the Giant Otter was supposed to decorate our house and get everyone in place for our arrival, intending to jump out with an exuberant "Surprise!"
There WAS a surprise alright. Upon our return, when Card threw open the door and flipped on the light George lied passed out on the couch, a roll of streamers in his paw. He was naked as usual, but his gut was enormous. It was clear he had fed on at least a half a dozen people tonight, and the smooth stillness of the enormous orb rising and falling with his content snores and the chorus of sloshes and gurgled echoing across the room told us that everyone in his belly had long since been reduced to Otter pudge.
Card stood there with his jaw hanging open. Then he hung his head low and mumbled, "So much for your party."
I smirked and kissed my Stoat on the cheek. "Don't worry, hon. I already have everything I need. Come on. No reason we shouldn't eat too." I led him to the kitchen, patting George's gluttonous gut as we passed. When I saw all the cars out front, I had dreaded a big exhausting party. What I really wanted was to spend some quality time with my Stoat.
To our delight, we found that the night was not a total wash, as on the kitchen table was a large chocolate cake, elegantly frosted with star patterns. We stared at the confectionary and sat down at the table. A hastily scrawled note was left. I read it out loud. "I ate everyone else, so I bought you a cake. Love, George." I smiled towards the living room.
"Well no sense letting this go to waste," I decided. I fetched a pair of plates and some silverware. Card cut us each a generous slice.
The Stoat shook his head as he took a bite, a bewildered smile on his muzzle. "I swear. What're we gonna do with that Otter?"
A loud whining gurgle sounded from the other room, followed by a low sighing belch. There was a moment of silence, and then the Otter continued to snore. I grinned. "I think the question is what is he going to do with us once we're stuffed with cake?"
Card's mouth pulled into a contemplative grimace. "Hmm. Maybe I'll only have one slice." He pated his own slight paunch, knowing it might not be wise to fatten up. He took a bite and moaned. "Oh this is good. Okay two slices."
I nudged his foot with mine. "I think we just gotta accept we'll end up on George's waistline one of these days."
My Stoat blushed. We both knew we would eventually, and I knew he really wanted to satisfy our friend’s hunger. "Happy Birthday, Dajan. I love you."
I smiled wide and took his paw in mine. "I love you too. Thanks for a great twenty-fifth birthday."
"Probably won't be twenty-five for long though." He glanced over his shoulder as what sounded like a hungry growl echoed into the kitchen.
I leaned across the table and kissed him. His lips tasted of warm breath and chocolate. I ran my fingers through his fur.
"I don't need it to last long, as long as I’m with you."
Card nodded. "So...you're ready? To...do the thing with me?"
I nodded. I was hesitant when we first met George, but now I couldn't be surer. "Let's finish this cake and go wake up that Otter and join our friends. That's where the real party is."
My Stoat nodded, and we cut ourselves another slice of George's gift.
