In my still mostly head canon fantasy-verse there was an ages old war between Chimera and Manticore, so long ago that few can remember it's true origins and mostly that it just happened. The end result, though, was that the Manticore lost, and had a goodly portion of their lands annexed by the victorious Chimera. Some stayed, trying to eke out a peaceful life, whilst a good many turned to being nomadic mercenaries, much like this lass here.
