Wow, it's been awhile since I've written one of these. I think it's about time I stopped neglecting these 2 kiddos.
Also, I've decided to stop naming these "Chapter X", because the numbers make it feel like there's a sense of plot in here, and I can't have that!
One Saturday evening, Cam’s parents were getting ready to eat dinner. Cam, however, wasn’t. They were instead sitting on the couch, quietly playing video games on their handheld, and looking out the window for something every few minutes.
Just as Cam was about to look out the window again, the doorbell rang. Cam excitedly got up and just barely remembered to grab 2 small slips of paper and put them in their pocket before running towards the door.
Cam opened the door to see their best friend Devin waiting for them. “Hey Devin,” they said.
“Hey Cam! So, are you ready for our date?”
Cam nodded, then looked back to their parents, who were watching the scene. “Devin’s here, so I’m leaving now. Bye.”
“Have fun Cam!” “Be safe!” Cam’s parents called back.
“I will!” they affirmed as they walked out and shut the door behind them.
After a bit of walking, the pair reached their destination; a fancy restaurant, perfect for a romantic date. Cam had been quite surprised when Devin had asked them on a date a few days ago, and indeed Devin wasn’t even entirely sure of their feelings, but they thought it was best to at least try and see if being datemates with Cam would work out.
After a bit of waiting, the pair was lead to their table, ignoring the strange looks from employees wondering where these kids’ parents were. As Cam and Devin looked at their menus, however, something very wrong became obvious. “Geez, are all restaurants this expensive?” Devin wondered aloud.
“I don’t know. It might be because this place is super fancy,” Cam said, frowning at the prices.
The pair decided to order the cheapest things they could find, and an awkward silence began as they waited for their food.
Eventually, Devin broke the silence. “So, what are people supposed to do on dates?”
“I don’t know,” Cam said, “I think we’re supposed to talk?”
“Oh. Talk about what?”
“I don’t know.”
And so, the silence resumed. Soon, their food came. They ate it in silence (it didn’t taste as good as it looked) and left, with Devin’s wallet feeling much lighter than before.
The pair walked in silence for a while, then Cam spoke. “Um... Thanks for buying me food, Devin. It was...”
“It was a total failure,” Devin said, looking down in disappointment. This date had been their idea, and it had just been a boring, awkward, expensive mess. They had thought that if they just copied what they’d seen on tv, it would all just... happen. Now, they just felt stupid.
Cam saw that Devin was sad, at that made them feel sad too. Then they remembered what they’d put in their pocket just before leaving. “Hey Devin,” they said, reaching into their pocket, “I found these a week ago, and I thought we might have some spare time after our date, so I brought them along.” As Cam finished, they revealed 2 all-day passes to the local amusement park. “So, you wanna go?”
Devin looked up, saw the passes, and smiled. Cam had just saved this date. “Yeah.”
Cam and Devin exited the amusement park as an employee changed the sign to “Closed”. It was 9:15 pm, and although the park closed at 9:00, the staff had met with quite some difficulty with getting the 2 kids to leave. It was only after the employees running the rides had all left that the pair reluctantly left as well.
“Heh, thanks Cam,” Devin said, “that was way more fun than eating fancy, overpriced food.”
The pair laughed a bit at that. “Hehe, yeah,” Cam agreed. “We should probably go back home now, it’s getting pretty dark and-” As they realized how dark it was, Cam got an idea. “Actually, I’ve got one more thing we can do.”
“Oh? What’s that?”
“It’s a surprise, c’mon!” Cam said, taking Devin’s hand as they began running, prompting Devin to follow.
Cam lead Devin a fair distance away from the town, and Devin was starting to get a bit concerned. Eventually, they Cam lead Devin up a small hill. When they reached the top, Cam finally stopped, flopping down on their back and panting heavily.
“What’s up,” Devin said, also panting, tired from the running, “need a break?”
“No,” Cam replied. Cam patted the ground next to them, encouraging Devin to lay down with them.
Devin was confused for a moment, but laid down on their back next to Cam. They were about to ask why Cam brought them here when they looked up and saw the night sky above them, filled with thousands of stars and beautiful colors that Devin had never seen in the sky before.
“Woah,” Devin said, “it’s so beautiful.”
“Yeah...”
“It never looked like this before. Why is it so...”
“In cities and other places like that, all the night time lights mess with the view. Get away from the light pollution, and you can see what it really looks like.”
“Wow...”
Cam and Devin laid there awhile, enjoying the view. Eventually, Devin spoke. “Cam, thanks. You made this the best date ever.”
“Heh, don’t give me all the credit. It was your idea, after all.”
“Nah, my idea was to go to a fancy restaurant and waste all my money.”
Cam chuckled. “Okay, fine. Don’t take the credit then.”
“... Hey Cam?”
“Yeah?”
“Do... do you wanna... kiss?”
Cam paused. There was something off about Devin’s request. “... Do you?” they asked back.
Devin paused. They realized that, no, they didn’t. They just felt like it was what they were supposed to do on a date. “... Nah. Wanna just hold hands?” they asked, offering their hand.
“Sure,” Cam replied.
And they laid there, gazing up at the stars, holding hands, and simply enjoying each other’s company. Maybe they loved each other, but not quite in a romantic way. Whatever the case, this would probably be the only “date” they would go on, but they would certainly visit that amusement park again.
And they would definitely come back here again.
Oh, whoops, did I accidentally put some plot in here? My bad. Oh well.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed, and as always, comments, questions, and criticisms are encouraged!
