This isn't really furry related, so I'm not sure why I'm posting it here, but it involves dragons and I'm really excited so...deal with it, lol. >.=.<
This is my lover. It's highly representational, because in reality his entire torso and upper arms are covered with tattoos. They are all very symbolic (and SO attractive...) but I drew a few of the most prominent and meaningful ones here, wrapping around his body rather than inked onto it.
I love his hair...it's like fire...I tried to pull the natural colors into the rest of the piece a little bit.
I might show this to him when he gets back from vacation.

Back in the good ol' days, artists learning their craft would only be allowed to work with charcoal and ink when starting. Eventually, they would _earn_ the right to erase by being allowed pencils. After that, they would eventually be allowed to use color, in the form of paint etc.
This picture makes me yearn for the good ol' days. The use of color in this piece is utterly catastrophic. So many bright, clashing colors, and to top it off, you have clashing, jagged flames to add to the visual disorientation and mental pain. The linework, cluttered appearance, and chaotic colors make the forms of this work blend into one giant technicolor failure. It takes considerable strain to make out a dragon head, or to see just what is going on.
Study this work: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2435606 This piece shows very well how the artist added a good amount of visual complexity without sacrificing coherence and shape definition. The use of colors is also superb. Of course you don't need to have such a uniform palate, but in your case, perhaps you should.

Wow, way to be an asshole about something that I did entirely for myself, purely for the fun of it. If you want to take the joy out of artwork, go talk to someone else.
I understand that there is a lot wrong with this piece. Color is not my strong point, I have only very recently even attempted it. The reason for that fear of color is people like you. Color is not the only thing wrong with this, there are anatomical problems and points in the inking that are off, but don't try to critique something that was never meant to be marketed or shown off in any way, that I in fact only posted on here as a whim, because I miss the boy that it focuses on very much.
I would like to hope that if I keep working at it I will be able to improve. On the other hand, what have you done that is even worthwhile, other than the one piece on your page that you seem so proud of?

Exactly why it would be reasonable to avoid color altogether and focus on the basics of rendering shape and anatomy, as well as shading. Your fear of color is rational in the same way that someone who cannot fly an airplane fears fiery death for attempting such alone in midflight.

But I wasn't trying to create a piece that is perfect in every way. I was trying to lay down some of what I have been feeling into a piece of artwork, so that I can maybe have some peace of mind. I have been depressed to the point of being severely irrational, and I needed something to focus my energies into. This was never intended as a piece to practice perfecting my artistic skills with, nothing I've posted on this site is. I never even should have posted it here in the first place. I'm sorry for wasting your time.
