I just got back from driving down to just north of Carbondale Illinois to watch the Solar Eclipse . I took off at 2:30AM to pick up
S0C0M_3 in Chicago and we trekked it down.
And just north of Champaign along the 57, we knew things were bad when we took one hour just to go 2 miles, I then did a 80 mile detour just to avoid Champaign. When we got back on the 57, we literally had just passed folks who were around us when we got off to bypass. It took them the same time to cover less than 14 miles that took me 80 miles to bypass.
And just north of Carbondale by 28 miles, I just pulled off at an exit, we had less than 12 minutes to watch this event. And we immediately noticed a off ramp shopping center lock was packed with event watchers. I drove just past it and pulled into the shade of a large tree next to a field and Dave and I rushed to set up, eyeing the eclipse in action.
Then it started getting dark, the sun was a sliver, the cicadas started singing, a nearby Rooster crowed, the temperature dropped (it was 105 degree heat index there!)
Then it happened...the Umbra.
HOLY SHIT!!! IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!!! The whole area cheered a massive cheer as we witnessed this gift from God.
Dave and I scrambled to snap photos. My good camera refused to co-operate, the second and tertiary cameras were quickly used. Seeing the rippling around the moon was fantastic...and I forgot to record all this with my video camera. I immediately said Johnny Cash's song 'Ring of Fire' would be so great right now, and immediately another solar viewer played my request on his portable stereo.
But my God, THIS...THIS was a Golden life moment to witness. Only thing that would compare it, would be if Bigfoot came out while we were watching this, getting in my car and screwing up with my radio stations.
Funny thing in a nasty way, it took us longer to get back from Carbondale than it takes to get from Memphis to Madison due to the traffic. 22.5 hours on the road total, 1081 miles driven.
I'm beat, and wanted to post this before I seriously sluce off and hit the sheets, I've been up 24 straight hours.

Yep, drug my happy ass to Orin Junction Wyoming to watch it myself. Simply fuckin amazing! I didn't get any good pics with my phone, and don't own a proper camera anymore. But WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!!!
We watched it from beginning to just after totality. I got a short video of the leaves on the trees casting crescents on the ground just prior to totality. I was completely blown away with the temperature change and how eerie the lighting was just before and after totality. Watching the shadow sweep in from the west was neat. A column of darkness like the shadow of the earth rising in the east at dusk. Then darkness, we spotted Mars and had a beautiful 360* sunrise. Then that sunrise opened up from the west and I looked back to that glowing ring of plasma in the sky just in time to watch the diamond ring form.
Breathtaking to say the least. I'm glad I made it.
P.S.
I feel ya on the drive!!! Took 3.5 hours to get there then 9.45 to get home!!!!

I saw it down in Missouri... and yeah, traffic leaving the area was HORRIBLE. not bad getting there in the first place, surprisingly... but I came in from the "not much there" direction.
No good pics, my cellphone overheated when I tried to do a time lapse early on, and never wanted to work quite right for the next while. :( I'll try to do a bit more planning for 2024...

You drove right past me! I couldn't get off work, and my boss's quote was, "We'll have 99.6% totality. You won't notice the .4%.... He was wrong. :( 5 miles too far north for totality. But still cool none the less. And I had to get back to work just after the darkest bit. Planes gotta fly.
