Not exactly true. Within the Purgatory Knights cards it tells the story of how they came to be. The evils of Darkness Dragon World seeped into Dragon World through a portal, and with them being the first "Knights" established, they fought against the demons into DDW. The only way they could protect their homeland was to seal the gates with them on the other side.
Years of dwelling in Darkness corrupted their minds and drove them mad, thinking it was Dragon World that abandoned them.
