I've Got Flash!! [ANIMATED LOOP]
AT LAST!!! I HAVE IT!!!
Yes, I've finally bought Flash - version CS3 Pro, to be more precise. And it's not some dodgy torrent thing or 'backup' or student edition or something that fell off the back of a lorry! It's a proper licensed and registered version. Seeing as it's not CS4, I managed to get it for a reasonable price from the web. It was still pretty expensive for me given that I've just finished uni and I'm not yet getting any income, but I've gotten so fed up with stupid Jasc Animation Shop that I decided enough was enough. (Jasc Animation Shop doesn't even have layers. ANIMATION SOFTWARE WITHOUT LAYERS. WHAT THE F*** WERE THEY THINKING?!!)
Even though my previous animations have been available in .swf format, they were actually just .gif and .avi files that I converted to .swf rather than being proper Flash files. Now I actually have the software, so this is my very first genuine Flash animation. It's just a goofy short loop about 12 seconds long of Rexar being a bit cute and funny - seems he is rather pleased about the new software.
Lol!
I've got A LOT to learn about Flash - I don't even use Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator so even the drawing tools are a bit different to me, let alone learning about timelines, automated tweens and Actionscript (great - another bloody programming language I'm going to have to learn!!). Having said that, I've taught myself how to use Paint Shop Pro, Animation Shop, Game Maker and all sorts in recent years from scratch, so I dare say I'll work things out slowly. If anyone does have any good Flash tips to hand, I'd really appreciate them at this stage. Just bear in mind that I am a proper Flash noob.
Lol!
Here's hoping this gets me my motivation back, and that I can start creating some decent animated - and possibly interactive - content in the future.

Lol - I think I probably did quite well making do with Animation Shop. But it was very tiresome - it didn't have layers, its drawing tools were worse than MS Paint, you couldn't add sound, it struggled with anything higher than 10fps, and the only good formats you could export to were .gif or .avi. Besides, there was no capacity for interactivity with Animation Shop either, and that is something that I would like to be able to do...
...once I've gone through the lengthy process of teaching myself how to, that is...
Thanks, VGM!

Lol!! Oops!
Well it's not just about familiarising oneself with software but also the processes and techniques of animation; I've done plenty of animation before now so I should be able to make a flying start with the software, even if it's going to take me a while to familiarise myself properly with its more comples features.
Anyway, thanks GM. And best of luck to you with Flash too.

Pretty cool!

draxi like I do, I'm not remotely surprised that this was done for him!
Lol!! Thanks for sharing.

I've been wanting to make games relevant to my RipRoarRex profile for a while, but the only programming I can do is with Game Maker. Game Maker is okay, but you can't just upload and run it on the web like you can with Flash. Plus file size with Game Maker is a real issue when lots of animation is involved.
It'll be a while till I get to the interactive stage though - I'm going to have to teach myself ActionScript from scratch. Luckily for me, I'm seeing similarities between ActionScript and GML (Game Maker Language, which I use for programming my games at the moment) so hopefully it should come to me fairly quickly.

...but... he was ALWAYS huggable!! Lol!
3-in-1 Stomp was a lot of effort for very little in my opinion. It shouldn't have been as hard as it was - it was an ambitious thing to attempt with Jasc Animation Shop, but Flash should make it easier to do things like that.

With flash, do you plan on doing any re-makes of some of your previous flashes? or are you just going to do new stuff?
A re-make sounds like it might be an easy way to learn the controls, ya know, to get you used to it. I'm not saying a COMPLETE remake, just sections until you get the hang of it ^^;

I must admit I've not thought about remaking old animations - if nothing else, it's a lot of work for something that is ultimately not really offering anything new.
I'll have to see anyway - I can only speculate about what I might try at the moment; actually putting any such things into action relies on a lot of things that I can't guarantee at the moment.

*chuckles* - I know how you feel, mate. I'm going through a tough spell artwise myself, having not finished a proper picture since mid-May. At the moment, Flash is a novelty. You wait until a time when I'm getting pissed off with Actionscript not doing what I want it to. Then >poof!< - my motivation will disappear.
I could animate smoothly with Jasc Animation Shop - that just comes down to going to the effort of drawing the requisite number of frames and using onionskinning effectively. Flash just makes task bit easier, seeing as it has layers and a more flexible onionskin facility than Animation Shop.
The challenge of making interactive animations or creating a Flash file that isn't full of redundant data is probably going to be the big problem for me. It's something that I took 3 years to learn with Game Maker's GML language (which is quite similar to ActionScript in some ways).

Heh - I don't even know what may have changed between this version and the previous one, or indeed with more modern versions. Hopefully that means I can pick it up fresh. The problem is going to be learning the syntax and the correct way to script events and triggers - Game Maker is similar in some ways (e.g. programming an instance variable in Game Maker is done by typing instancename.instancevariable = value, and the use of () and {} brackets is similar) but the actual method of determining whether conditions have been met to trigger an event is rather different.
Cool! Heh, it looks like Rexar is happy with this new software of yours, I bet he's thinking of all the stomping and carnage he can bring in your future animations!
I hope that your new flash software will inspire ya to do more of your awesome works! I can't wait to see what you come up with it!

Thanks for that, feathery. Just trying to familiarise myself with the basic format of functions and some of the syntax involved at present. Struggling a little, given that my usual software - Game Maker - and Flash have slightly different definitions of "object" and "instance".
Anyway me hating adobe aside, you should check out the tutorials at Newgrounds. I learned so much browsing the flash forum there and looking at their tutorials

Tsk. One day you'll realise that the USA's perpetual participation in the Confederations Cup is completely meaningless, simply because you and Mexico are the only decent teams in it! If your lot had to compete against the European nations like we do, you probably wouldn't even qualify for the World Cup!
Heh - well I should stress that I use Paint Shop Pro which is like a poor man's Photoshop. It does have burn and dodge tools but I can honestly say I've never used either of them. All I use is brush and floodfill tools for colouring and a smudge tool for blending.
Heh - well thanks. I do actually have a few qualifications in Fine Art; it's been a few years since I've painted anything, but I was always more of a pencil and coloured-pencil person. Seeing as I do have a scanner nowadays, I suppose I should try and create some traditional artwork to upload sometime.
