Recently I've been inspired by some Star Trek fan fictions, and decided to write up my own small mini-series about Sa'Rahn. This is the first of four parts.

A shrill musical chirp came from his combadge resting on the nightstand beside the bed. It repeated itself a once more before Sa'Rahn could muster the strength to drag his heavy hand over and tap it, canceling the alarm feature. A groggy moan rumbled in his throat as he returned his arm and flopped over onto his back, his large belly wobbling atop him. His chest slowly expanded as he filled his lungs with a deep breath of air, his body still numb from sleep. The dark room was lit only by the countless stars outside the reinforced windows, yet still, it felt too bright to open his eyes.
His drooped whiskers perked slightly at the feeling of movement in the bed next to him. He began to smile some as he felt a gentle hand lay on top his bare chest. "Morning, big boy." Iris whispered softly into his ear.
She ran her hand down his furry chest and over his belly. Sa'Rahn began to purr and squirmed in bed a little at the feeling of Iris' fingers combing through his thick brown fur. The sensation of her nails scratching his skin was stimulating. Opening his eyes only slightly, he moved his head in her direction and nuzzled her neck with his muzzle. "Good morning, flower." He whispered back sleepily, his words slurred by his purring. She in turn laid her head on his forehead gently and embraced him, her arm lain over the Caitian's chest. Her silky black hair draped one of his ears and laid over his right eye, but it didn't bother him. He inhaled deeply while nuzzling her cheek, filling his senses with the sent he had grown so accustom to. "Mmm... I'm so happy you're here..." He mumbled, taking his free hand and stroking her hair from her face to see her deep Betazoid eyes clearly.
Iris grinned and kissed him on the nose as she leaned over to her side of the bed more. She laid his cheek in her palm and replied, "I'm glad I'm here too."
Sa'Rahn and Iris had been together as mates for a long time now. The better part of five years, when he thought of it. Ever since the away mission under his late Captain where he had encountered her, they had slowly become closer. It was simple attraction at first, but after that one shore leave on Risa... he knew he loved her. And what's more, she seemed to love him. He was lucky to have her in his life, he felt. An awkward, obese, mess like himself, he thought, and she actually loved him. Heck, found him attractive even! He pressed the side of his face into her palm more, wishing he could enjoy her presence as long as he could. "I don't wanna leave."
"Oh sweetie, I know..." Iris said, trying to comfort him, laying a hand on his stomach. "But, everything you told me last night... You've always wanted this, worked so hard for it."
"I know, but... I want you to be there too." Sa'Rahn reached up and placed his hand atop hers.
On the away mission, the two of them met on opposite sides of the Federation, so to speak. The mission and results had been classified by Starfleet Intelligence. They still weren't public knowledge as far as Sa'Rahn knew, and probably never would be. Stupid, he thought, considering the case was in every sense of the word "irrelevant" now. Yet still, Iris, legally, didn't exist. And technically, she shouldn't physically exist, either. But, with the help of his late captain, and good friend, numerous favors and silent handshakes to key members in Intelligence allowed Iris some freedoms from her custody. In retrospect, it made him angry how whole incident had been handled so sloppily back then.
Now that he himself was an Admiral of the Caitian Star Pride fleet, Sa'Rahn had been slowly maneuvering his own weight in the Federation to help Iris, obtain her the rights she deserved. The right to be free. To be with him. The wheels churned slowly, however. DTI wasn't very fond of letting an anomaly walk unsupervised. But endless documents, requests, and papers were in the works to pave the way for her. He knew, he had signed more than he could count. "And I will be with you! Soon! I promise. You know that." She gave him another kiss on his forehead, reassuring him. He whimpered slightly, knowing her to be right, but still disappointment.
As she got up from bed he continued to lightly hold onto her hand until she was too far out of reach, lettering her grasp slide from his palm. He laid there a moment more, smiling and continuing to purr softly while he watched her step around the bed until his stomach blocked his view. He tensed his muscles and stretched his arms, still lying belly-up, the sheets covering only his lower half now. The bed creaked as he wiggled and twisted his hips allow his tail some breathing room beneath the covers; it had been snagged underneath him prior. He knew he should get up as well, but was still too sleepy and lazy to bring himself to do so. "Are you going to be ok while I'm gone?" He asked quietly as he watched her dress into the uniform she had laid over his chair last night.
Her deep solid eyes glanced over her shoulder at him, mildly pretending to be shocked he was watching. She gave him a playful glare and grinned, replying, "Oh babe, you know me. I'm sure I can find something to get in trouble with while you're gone."
Although he realized she was kidding of course, he was still concerned. Sa'Rahn forced himself to raise up and lean back on his elbows, forcing him to exert more strength than he thought it would. "I could talk to your parole. See if she would be willing to-..."
"Shhh..." She shushed him, stepping up to his side of the bed and kneeling down to his level of eye-contact. She placed a hand on his belly to comfort him as he looked into her eyes. "Stop worrying. I'll be just fine, waiting for you when you get back."
"I'm sorry." He mumbled. "I just want this to work for us."
"And it will." She told him, giving him a kiss. "Now come on and get up. I know you have a big day ahead of you. I'll be fine here. Why not get a shower, and grab a late breakfast before you head out, hmm?"
"Mmm..."He liked the thought of that, a big breakfast sounded good. He hadn't eaten since, well, last night! As if on cue at the mention of food, his belly rumbled loudly to agree with the notion. His ears perked as he looked down at his middle. "Well I'm glad to hear you agree with her!" Iris chuckled a little and smiled. "Yeah, now that you mention it, I'm starving. Breakfast would hit the spot right about now."
