Are the shadows done frame-by-frame? Because they look like they're on a static layer.

Also, nice use of brushes!

it's just some kind of mask layer that changes the colour on certain areas with a small ripple effect added to it, so not frame by frame thankfully

yeah but you could have done essentially the same thing in most softwares that handle compositing like After Effect. The big + here is that I can comeback and fix stuff in the background and animation as I do the compositing part which saves a ton of time.
