The blade on a scythe is not supposed to attach in parallel with the shaft. How are you supposed to cut wheat like that? It would be very difficult to use. The blade needs to be angled, so that when held with the business end down at cutting height the blade is parallel to the ground, and so in optimal cutting position.

That depends on the type of scythe being used. There are a lot of variations in angle of blade from the handle as well as the angle of the blade in parallel to the handle. Different types for different work.
