Am I the only one who finds The Orville awful? I have endured a few episodes and the experience has been painful. I would expect more mature humor and more articulate characters on a youtube parody called "Star Trek: the retard generation" made by a 12 year old boy and his buddies in a garage.
I'm surprised to find a few people I consider intelligent saying they like it.

It comes down to what you think of Seth McFarlane's humour. If you find it bearable the show is better than decent, (he does seem to be toning it down), if you cannot stand it then many episodes will be totally unwatchable, (there's still enough of it that you will have to deal with it).
I've dropped it myself¹ because of a mix of not being able to stand McFarlane's humour for very long and, ironically, because of what it's doing right. If it were just being a Trek parody, I would be bearable to watch from time to time. Watching what would be a really good Trek-style show while having to worry about the episode suddenly becoming unwatchable OTOH....
Oh well, I guess I'll have to get my space SF fix from watching Capt. Shack's "Exploration, Mod all the Things" streams and W4stedspace's "Uncooperative Survival" streams. The humour in those is much more organic.
1: I've also dropped STD, but in that case because I've said the eight deadly words about the focus character: "I don't care what happens to this person."

Seth McFarlane's humor is a hit or miss thing. Some times he can be hilarious and others is lame. For example, I loved the first Ted movie, it made laugh my ass off. One of my favorite comedies. Then in the second movie the humor was all over the place, it was like the writer couldn't decide if being irreverent or preachy and got stuck between those two in some humorless grey area.
Humor is a thing that can miss the mark very easily. It's either funny or is not. And the easiest way to miss that mark is when a show lacks focus, when is trying to be too many different things at the same time. Like this one.
