Yep, the Luger, the Walther P38 and the original "AK-47" aka the STG 44 didn't appeared out of the blue you know?

Actually the Luger was developed in 1908 (hence the P-08 Luger). The Walther p38 WAS developed during the nazi period in Germany but the walther company and the basic engineering which went into the Model of 1938 (pistol 1938 or P38), was relatively old design. Neither weapon was the result of government effort and were basic engineering of private weapons companies.

The STG-44 was revolutionary, but was more or less overcomplicated, over engineered and unreliable, despite being a brilliant concept. The AK-47 was the true breakthrough, translating what the Germans had tried to do into a proven concept via the Russian method of brute force design.

But yeah, anyway, the Luger was itself an advancement of the borchardt design, the Walther from the browning hi power and the STG-44 stole from MANY weapons of WW-1. Not out of the blue but not some mystical Nazi engineering.

Even the greatest feats of Nazi germany, the dreaded V2, borrowed much from American genius Robert Goddard, jets from an englishman Frank Whittle. The nazis appeared to be gifted innovators but in reality their advances occurred at a rapid pace because they were willing to kill a lot of people, often their own very gifted people, recklessly pursuing new technology.

Not unlike how the Russians took an early lead in the space race at the cost of a number of cosmonauts. The US went fast and loose also but after incinerating 3 members of the Apollo program our people kinda forced a slowdown.
