It is with the deepest of regrets that I have to announce the passing of 'Zipper', one of the three papillon dogs owned by my sister Rhonda Pereira - all of whom I got to see back in June, 2017, when I came to Wantagh, New York (as described in my ten-part journal "Return to New York")...
Like most dogs of this kind, papillons (taken care of properly) can live for up to 18 years of age. 'Zipper' was no ordinary dog, as he surpassed that limit, and lived to the ripe old age of 20 years and 4.5 months (before he had to be put down).
Brought to America from Spain by my (then) brother-in-law Paco Pereira, 'Zipper' was a very active canine - jumping up and down on couches and beds, just to keep whoever was already lying down on it company. Of course, my two nieces Erica and Corynne loved to dress him up, and take photos of him in costume.
Years later, 'Zipper' was accompanied by two other papillons ('Estrella' and 'Chewie), so that he wouldn't feel alone, whenever Rhonda and the girl left the house. Of course, by his last years, he became so frail, he was unable to climb the stairs to my sister's second-floor bedroom (while the latter two dogs were able to do it with ease). So, his last months were spent on the first floor...
I was fortunate to capture a few photos of this unique trio, during my visit (mainly to attend the wedding of Corynne and her groom Hector).
However, for this memorial 'photo-op', I'm posting this rare snapshot of 'Estrella' (taken by Erica) sharing a memorial meal of chicken (on a candle-lit kitchen table) with the family during Zipper's final week on Earth. (Said picture already appears in her Facebook wall.)
'Zipper' was one dog that both the Martinez and Pereira families will never forget...

I'm sorry to hear that

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
