It was wintertime in Adventure Bay. Marshall and Herbie were with everest in the south. They were watching over a penguin family who just had a chick.
Isn't that baby penguin adorable? Asked Everest
It sure is! Agreed Herbie. How long does one take to grow up? He asked
It does take a while. Answered Everest. But they have wonderful parents to help it grow!
That's true. Said Marhall. Hey what do you guys say we go and get some fish for them?
Ok! Everest replied. I've got a bucket of them over there.
I'll get them! Said Herbie as he runs over to the fish bucket.
He returns with the fish and tosses one to the penguin chick.
She eats it and chitters happily.
Herbie smiles. Awww, here have some more! He said as he tosse another one, which the chick happily eats.
Then a growling noise was heard.
W-was that a bear? Asked Marshall getting a little nervous.
*giggles* No, it was just stomach. Seeing that chick eat is making me hungry. Said Everest
No that you mention it, I'm feeling rather hungry myself. Said Herbie. Good thing I brought some pup treats!
You did?! Asked Marshall and Everest.
Well, yeah. I bring some in case I get hungry and there's no food nearby. In fact, I use to do something like that with fruits and veggies before I became a member of the PAW Patrol. Herbie explained
Well that was very clever of you Herbie! Said Everest. How many pup treats do you have?
Uhhh eleven! Answered Herbie. I ate one along the way here.
Well, then that means one of us will have to get one less. Said Marshall
Herbie thought about that fact for a moment.
You guys can get four, and I'll get three. He said
But they are your pup treats Herbie. Stated Everest
Yeah I know, but I don't mind sacrificing one. Besides, I ate one during the trip, so it's only fair. Herbie said
Aww that's so kind of you! Said Everest
I'll be right back. Herbie said as he went back to his tractor.
When he got to his tractor, which was parked next to the a cold river, he searched inside it for the treats.
Hmm, I know they're here somewhere. Herbie pondered. He continued looking for them.
Suddenly, a cracking sound emitted from underneath the ice. Herbie looked up in confusion.
What was that? He wondered. Hmm, must be ice falling somewhere. He assumed.
But Herbie didn't know that it was not ice falling, but ice breaking. And it was doing so right underneath his tractor! He eventually finds the pup treats.
Found them! He declared victoriously. Alright now- He said before getting interrupted by a more loud cracking sound.
W-w-w-where's that noise coming from? He asked getting concerned.
Then a crack formed in front of him.
*gasp* Oh no! He exclaimed before it extended to the right side of his tractor. Whaa! He jumped
Herbie knew where the last crack would form, so he tried call Marshall and Everest with his pup tag.
Back at the penguin family, Marshall and Everest were each taking turns feeding them with fish before their pup tags rang.
Yes Herbie? Marshall and Everest answered
Marshall! Everest! I need help! Herbie called
What happened?! Everest asked
I was looking for my pup treats, and then the ice around my tractor started to crack! I'm just one crack away from being a water marooned corgi! Herbie panicked
Don't worry Herbie. We're on our way! Said Marshall, then he, Herbie, and Everest hung up. Let's go Everest! Herbie needs us!
I'm ready when you are! Said Everest. And with that, she and Marshall went to go save Herbie.
Herbie was getting nervous. He gulped out of worry, and then the ice cracked some more.
Maybe I shouldn't make any loud our medium noises. Herbie whispered. Then the ice cracked a little more. Or maybe no noise at all! Herbie thought in his mind. Her
Then Marshall and Everest arrived. They could see Herbie on his tractor being as still as possible.
Don't worry Herbie, we're here to rescue you! Said Marshall
Then the ice cracked again.
Shhh you guys. Said Herbie. Any sound loud enough will make this ice crack.
Oops! Sorry! Said Marshall as the ice cracks again. Herbie gave Marshall an anxious expression. I mean, sorry. Marshall whispered
How do we get him back on the solid ice? Marshall asked Everest.
Maybe, we can use my grappling hook to pull his tractor to safety. Everest whispered
Good idea. Said Marshall
*low bark* Grappling hook! Then Everest shot it onto Herbie's tractor.
Herbie. We got you. Whispered Everest. Herbie smiled as Everest and Marshall began tugging on Herbie's tractor.
Herbie jumped carefully down and started pushing.
The tractor started to move, and it was getting closer, and closer to the more solid ice. Herbie was feeling more relieved. But then, the ice cracked even further, it had only a little ways to go before it can carry Herbie and his tractor out to the river.
Uh ohhhhh. Herbie whispered fearfully.
We have to hurry! Said Marshall.
Everest nodded. She, Marshall, and Herbie hurried to get the tractor to safety. Then all of a sudden, the ice fully snaps loose from land. Jerking Herbie backwards into the water, and yanking Everest and Marshall onto the piece of ice.
WWHOOAA Duuhhh! Marshall and Everest exclaimed as they landed on the ice flow.
Oh no! We're drifting away from land! Gasped Marshall
Oh dear! Said Everest looking a little worried. Sorry we coildn't rescue you in time Herbie. Everest said as she turns around only to find Herbie's not on the flow of ice.
Herbie? Where'd you go? Everest wondered
*gasp* There he is! Marshall exclaimed as he pointed to Herbie struggling in the water.
Help mee! Herbie called
Oh no! Hang on Herbie! *barks* Grappling hook! Everest deployed the hook just as Herbie sank underneath the water. Then, the hook jerked a bit, indicating that it successfully caught Herbie.
Everest pulled him in and onto the ice flow.
Herbie! Are you alright? She asked
C-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-cold! I'm c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-cold! Herbie shivered
Too bad I don't have my EMT gear on. Sighed Marshall. Or I would've given you a hot water bottle.
What else could we use? Asked Everest
*Shivers, then barks* H-h-h-h-h-house! And Herbie's tractor transformed into his pup house.
Great thinking Herbie! Said Everest. Let's get you in your house.
Then she and Marshall pick up the freezing corgi and place him inside his pup house. It doesn't fully warm him up, but it did protect him a little from the cold environment.
So now what do we do? Said Marshall. Herbie's cold, we're drifting away from land and out to sea, we don't know where we are- Marshall got interrupted by another growling noise. And we have bears out here?! He said shockingly.
Actually that's still my stomach. I didn't get any pup treats yet. Everest stated
Oh, right. Let's go ahead and eat some! Said Marshall
They got two each, and chose to save some for later. Then Everest brought one for Herbie to eat.
Eat this so you won't get hungry. She said to Herbie who was still shivering.
Herbie took the pup treat and ate it. After he gulped it down, he resumed to shivering.
Poor Herbie. Said Marshall sympathetically. He's too cold to even move.
I hope he doesn't get sick. Said Everest. Especially since Aid's not with us.
Yeah. That's too bad. Sighed Marshall
It was getting dark. Fortunatley, because Herbie is somewhat of a wild sleeper, his pup house was wide; and had enough room for Marshall and Everest to lay down in as well.
Everest gets in and moves closer to Herbie, trying to keep him warm.
Whoo! You really are cold! Everest uttered
Marshall went in as well. Wow! He feels like a frozen pupsicle! He kidded. Then he and Everest laughed, while Herbie could only smile and shiver.
We should rest. Maybe we'll be back on land when we wake up. Everest said
Yeah, I guess so. Agreed Marshall. Well good night Herbie! Good night Everest. *yawn* Marshall said as he rested his head.
Good night Marshall. Good night Herbie. Hope you can get warm enough tonight. Everest said while she laid down.
G-g-g-g-g-g-g-good n-n-n-n-n-n-n-night y-y-y-y-y-y-y-you t-t-t-t-t-t-t-two. Herbie shivered. He felt like it would be a while before he'll get warm again.
While they were sleeping on the drifting flow of ice, Herbie had a dream where he was basking in the warm sunlight. He laid on a hill with colorful flowers everywhere. And then a nice, red, warm blanket popped up over him and floated softly on his back. He sighed with peace. After that, a bowl of heated meat with kibble inside appeared next to him. The steam from the bowl made it look more satisfying. Herbie let out a calm sigh as he relaxed in the warmness of the day, before his dream ended and he woke up to daylight.
*yawn* What a nice dream that was! He said
Everest and Marshall were still sleeping. Herbie giggled.
You guys can keep sleeping. I'll keep a lookout for anything important. Herbie said as he sat down and watched the lands of ice pass by. Hey! I'm not so cold anymore! He realized. I can talk, act, and think normally again. He said as he stretched.
But Herbie did still have a problem. He was more warm, but the cold from the icy water and from last night got to his left hind leg. And it made it very numb, so Herbie can't feel it. He notices a little later.
*gets up, then falls back down* Whoa! What happened? He says as he looks at his partially thicker leg. Oh my! What happened to my leg? I can't...*tries to move it*.....feel it that much. Maybe it was the intense cold I felt. He said
Then Marshall and Everest started to wake up. Everest couldn't feel Herbie on her left side, and Marshall didn't feel him on his right side. With their eyes still closed, they searched the area next to each of their sides with one of their paws.
Eventually, they both simultaneously extend their paws above the area where Herbie used to be, and they collided with one another. Then they both opened their eyes only to see each other.
Hmmm! They went at the same time.
Marshall and Everest saw Herbie sitting outside the pup house. Oh, there he is! They said at the same time again before looking at each other and laughing.
Good morning Herbie! How was your night? Asked Everest
Not the best. Herbie sighed
What's wrong? Everest pondered
Yeah, you're not shivering anymore. Marshall pointed out.
Herbie physically demonstrates how his left leg in numb by getting up and trying to walk to them; only to sit back down on his left side after he turned around.
Is something wrong with your leg? Asked Marshall
Yes. Herbie said sadly. My leg is numb, so I can't feel it. He explained. I think all the cold I felt is what caused this.
Oh dear. Sorry that happened to you. Said Everest
Maybe you can try shaking it awake. Suggested Marshall
Herbie shakes his left leg, but it stays thick, and motionless.
Then Everest thought of something. Try wiggling your toes. She said
Herbie tried to, but couldn't. If he can't feel his leg, then he can't fee his toes.
Let's try tickling his paw. Marshall said
Then he and Everest brushed his left hind paw with their tails. Unlike usual, Herbie doesn't laugh, because he doesn't feel the tickling.
That's funny. Usually he laughs from something like that. Marshall stated
Yeah. It does sound odd if you tickle Herbie, but he doesn't laugh. Everest says with a confused look.
Herbie frowned and whimpered lowly. Everest noticed his sadness.
Buuuuut that's only his left leg and left paw. She says while smiling at Marshall.
Heheh, yeah. He's still got his right paw. Marshall said. And that paw has his you know what. He added while winking at Everest.
Herbie looked up at the two pups with his ears down.
Need cheering up Herbie? Asked Everest
The sad corgi slowly nodded while rubbing his left front leg with his right.
Here you goooooo. Said Everest as she tickled Herbie's right hind paw with her left paw.
Herbie smiled and held in his laughter. Only a slight heheh came out.
And maybeee you'll cheer up from this too! Marshall says while giving Herbie's right side a poke, making him squeak a little.
Oh! And didn't Marshall mention your you know what being here? Everest asked while hovering her paw over the middle of Herbie's right paw.
Herbie just shyly smiled a little, and tugged a bit on his left ear.
Everest looked up at him. You ready for this? She asked
Mmmmmmmm. Herbie muttered
Sounds like an ok at least! Everest said as she started tickling Herbie's tickle spot.
Herbie's teeth showed as he smiled. But he didn't laugh though.
Marshall saw that Herbie was trying to hold back laughter. Aww come onnn! You look sad, so let's make you glad! He said as he tickled both of Herbie's sides.
Herbie wriggled a little. Then Everest looked at his belly.
And maybeeee, you could use some cheering up here too! She stated as she tickled Herbie's belly with her other paw.
MMMMMM! MMMhhmmmmmm! Hee! Herbie went, before his mouth opened up. Ahahahahahahahahaha! Ohahahahahahahaha! Alrihihihihhihihihight! Ihihihihihihihihihi feel a bihihihihihit better! He laughed. Okahahahahahahahahay okay! I gihihihihihihihihive uuuuup!
Everest and Marshall stop tickling him. Feeling better? Everest asked the young corgi.
Mhmm. Herbie said while he nodded.
Good! Marshall said. Cause we at least need you to stay happy. After all, you need your leg to heal.
Mmhmmm. Muttered Herbie while looking at his left leg with his eyes half open.
Everest looked at the lands of ice. We could swim over to shore, but we don't have the right equipment to keep us safe from the cold water. She said
And we don't have a way to get Herbie's tractor onto land. Marshall adds
Good point. Said Everest. I hope we'll find a way soon.
Mmmhhhhmmmm. Herbie mutters in his mouth "Me too".
Marshall noticed that Herbie wasn't speaking much, even after being tickled. Hey, you ok buddy? He asked
Herbie nodded as he moves his eyes downright with his eyes still half closed and his smile being cut in half.
You still depressed over your numb leg? Marshall asked
Mmhhmmm. Uttered Herbie
You just don't feel like talking. Wondered Marshall
Herbie shook his head while moving his eyes to the left.
Ok. I understand. Said Marshall. Hey, you still don't mind being tickled though right? Cause you do at least need to keep a smile! Asked Marshall.
Herbie moved his eyes down and very slowly nodded.
Don't worry buddy. Your leg will be back to normal in no time. Marshall comforted as he rubs Herbie's back.
Then he gently tickled Herbie's right side. Causing Herbie to smile a little and shut his eyes.
Marshall smiled at the sight of this and tickled his left side. Herbie still didn't laugh, but he smiled brighter.
Marshall then unfortunately forgets about Herbie's numb leg and tries to tickle his left hind paw. This action brings out a noticeable negative effect. When Marshall did this, Herbie's smile started to fade very quickly, and his eyes became half closed again.
Marshall saw Herbie's dramatic change in expression. Oh, I-I'm so sorry Herbie! He stammered
Herbie just let out a deep, sad sigh, before his eyelids opened up completely and his ears raised.
Marshall, quickly thinking, goes for Herbie's right hind paw, and his tickle spot. Herbie felt a smile starting to grow and laughter boiling up in his body.
Go on Herbie! Show your happiness! Marshall said as he smiled.
Mmmmm! Ggrrkk! Hrrrghhhh! Dnnnhhhh! Kehehehehehe, heeheeheehee, ooohhhhhhhhhhhhh. Herbie groaned. OHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOKAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAY! YOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOU GOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOT MEHEHEHEHEHEHE! He bellowed joyfully. TIHIHIHIHIHICKLE SPOHOHOHOHOHOT! MYHYHYHYHYHY TIHIHIHIHIHICKLE SPOHOHOHOHOHOT! IT TIHIHIHIHIHIHIHIHICKLES! Herbie laughed
Marshall then stopped. So, how do you feel now? He asked
B-better. Herbie answered. Thank you for cheering me up.
You're welcome! Said Marshall. Oh look! You're not smiling as muuuch! Marshall said as he began tickling Herbie's tickle spot again.
Kahahahahahahahahaha! Hahaaaa! Ohhhohohohohoho! Ok Marshahall! I'm dohohohohohohone! I'm done! Heheheheheheh! I'm smiling a lohohohohohohot! Seehehehehee?! Laughed Herbie
Alright Herbie. But remember to keep up the smiling! Marshall said before giving Herbie one more tickle on his hind paw.
Eehee! Peeped Herbie from the tickle. Ok Marshall. I will! Herbie said with a smile.
Marshall walked up beside Everest, who was still looking out to the icy land.
Sooo, how are we going to get to land? Marshall asked
*sigh* I don't know Marshall. I don't know. Everest sighed
Then, they noticed something. The lands of ice was getting farther and farther.
What's going on? Marshall asked worriedly.
Everest looks ahead and gasps. We're not far from the ocean! She said
Marshall looks ahead as well, and sees that they were heading to open sea.
If we don't get off this ice flow, we'll never get to land! Marshall said
Herbie got a bit worried. Then he looked over to land and saw ten penguins nearby.
He tried to walk over so he could get their attention, but his leg was still numb. So, he got up with all his might, and walked closer to the penguins.
Hey penguins! He called. The penguins looked over and saw Herbie. Marshall, and Everest floating down the current on an ice flow.
We need help! We're stuck on this ice flow, and the current is pushing us out to sea. We'll never get onto land if we're all the way out there! Can you help us? Herbie called
The penquins chittered in agreement, and ran into the water. Then they went behind the ice flow and started to push on it.
Then the ice flow stopped, much to Marshall and Everest's confusion.
Hey, how'd we stop? Marshall asked
I-I don't know. Answered Everest
I do! Herbie said. Some flippered friends are going to get us to land. He stated
The other two pups smiled and wagged their tails.
We're finally going to get on land! Said Marshall excitedly.
And we can finally get you warm Herbie. Everest declared
Herbie smiles until he felt a crash that shook their ice flow. It then started moving towards the ocean again. What's happening? He wondered
Another large ice flow bumped into theirs, and was doubling the work of the penguins underwater.
Oh no! Exclaimed Everest. The penguins are trying to push two flows of ice now.
We have to move on the other one. Said Marshall. But how do we tell the penguins that we've moved?
You guys go on ahead. I'll think of something while I get my tractor ready. Herbie instructed
So Marshall and Everest jumped onto the other ice flow, but Marshall slipped on the ice and almost fell into the water.
Whoa whoa whoa! He exclamied as he tried to balance on the edge.
Marshall! Everest shouted as she heads over to him and pulls him back on the the solid ice.
Whew! Thanks Everest. Said Marshall
No problem! Everest said. Then she and Marshall sat down and waited for Herbie to come onto the new flow of ice as well.
Herbie barked, and transform his pup house back to his tractor. He then drove it onto the other ice flow, and jumped back on the old one.
What's he doing? Marshall pondered
Next, Herbie took a deep breath, and jumped into the water.
HERBIE!! Marshall and Everest shouted
Herbie swam down and saw the penguins. He motioned for them to let go of the flow they're pushing, and start pushing the next one.
So the ten penguins started to swim the other ice flow to push it. They made progress on moving it to the side and closer to land.
But then, a noticeably more bigger penguin looked back at Herbie. He was having a hard time swimming back up to the surface due to the current; and was getting weaker due to the cold. Just as he was about to give up, he felt something snag on his pup pack and drag him upward.
Back on the other ice flow, Everest was sitting patiently, yet a little worriedly for Herbie to show up. Marshall was pacing back and forth nervously.
Where is he? Why'd he go back into that freezing water? How will he live from that? Marshall worries
*giggles* Calm down Marshall. I'm sure Herbie knew what he was doing, but I am concerned about how he'll feel after that. I mean, he aready has a numb leg from being in the water once. And I don't wanna know how he'd be after doing it twice. Everest said
Marshall whimpered nervously. Then, out of nowhere, Herbie appeared on the ice flow all wet and soggy.
*cough cough* Don't say *cough* can't. Say plant! *cough* He coughed
Herbie! The other two pups said joyfully.
Are you ok? Everest asked
I-I-I don't know. Herbie said a little weakly. I don't feel so good.
Why did you jump back in the water like that? Asked Marshall
Because I didn't want you guys to do it. That was the only way we could tell the penguins to push this new *cough* ice flow back to land. Herbie explained
Oh Herbie. That was very brave of you. Everest stated
Yeah, you're a hero! Marshall said happily.
Herbie smiled, then coughed again.
It wasn't long before the penguins successfully pushed the ice flow near the land.
Come on you guys. Let's get off of this thing! Everest said as she jumped onto land.
You ready Herbie? Marshall asks as he looks back at the soggy corgi.
*cough* Yep. Herbie said as he gets up. But I need to get in my tractor so I can get it onto land too. And with my numb leg, I can't jump, so I can't get in it. He said while frowning.
Marshall thought about this, and got an idea, but felt sorry he had to use it. Sorry Herbie. The dalmatian said
Sorry for what? Asked Herbie confusingly.
*gasp* Lookout Herbie! I see a giant roach behind you! Marshall exclaimed
AHH!! Where?! WHERE?! Herbie screamed while jumping in his tractor to possibly get away from it.
That's what I'm sorry about. Marshall said while giggling nervously.
Oh, ummm ok. Herbie said. Well, at least I'm in my tractor now.
And with that, Marshall jumped off the ice flow, and Herbie drove off. They all finally made it onto land. The penguins felt like the ice flow was lighter, possibly meaning that its passengers were off. So they swam to the surface, and up on the land where the pups were.
Thank you guys so much for saving us. Said Everest
If it weren't for you, we would have been in a really big problem! Said Marshall
They penguins chittered happily. Herbie flopped down from his tractor.
W-w-whoaaa umphh! He went as he fell.
The penguins saw how cold he looked, and went towards him.
Huh? Herbie uttered in confusion as the ten penguins huddled together with him in the middle. This made him feel much warmer.
Haaaaa, that feels sooo good. He sighed. Thanks for making me warm, and for saving us. Herbie said
What do you say we head back after Herbie feels warm enough? Said Everest to Marshall.
Heheh, sure. He does need to keep warm, and wait for his leg to get back to normal. Said Marshall
Then Herbie felt a tickle in his nose.
Aaaaaa, aaaaaa, aaaAAAACHOOO! He sneezed, accidentally knocking all the penguins off of him. *sniffle* Ohhhh. He moaned
Aaand wait for his cold to settle down a bit so we can take him to Aid. Added Marshall
Then he, Everest, Herbie, and the penquins all laughed.
The End
