The following is a LOOOOOONG overdue birthday animation for
cheshirecatmaster
In this, Jervis Tetch, a.k.a. "The Mad Hatter" invites his latest "Alice" to a Tea Party to die for. Unfortunately, he didn't anticipate the kinda friends this "Alice" keeps by her side.
The animation is available in the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq_scEkLfo4
On the technical side, this is the first and last time I'll ever use full on voice over in an animation with characters who have lips because...my God, this was time consuming. And entirely self imposed! Like this honestly ended up having a lot more going on with set up than it had any right to, and it was entirely from my brain to do this to myself despite an otherwise simple set up... O_______o;
BUT...hopefully, it's worth it! For those unfamiliar, the voice actor who plays both Killer Croc and Mad Hatter is the same actor who dubbed the audioplay with Parasite that was commissioned not too long ago. And the Cheshire Cat Birthday Audio I commissioned myself in April.
The actor once again will remain anonymous, but if anyone is looking to commission him, just let me know, and I will act as middle man for his sake. :P
Fun fact, the script actually came after I had extracted all the dialogue from Harley in Injustice 2. I had to basically write around specific lines of dialogue to make conversations SEEM slightly organic.
...Again, first and last time I'll ever do that... 'XD
As per usual, a lot of the sound effects are from various sources I've gathered over the years online, and several belly noises are from the delightful
jeschke who I cannot thank enough for sharing!
All that madness aside, I hope this one is to everyone's liking!
(Better PHENOMENALLY late than never, right? 'XD)

This...was NOT worth the wait.
Nope.
IT WAS MORE THAN WORTH IT!!!
Ahem...so...giddy exclamations aside...
First and foremost, before I comment on your fine work as a whole, would like to simply state that this actor's impression of Peter MacNicol's Mad Hatter is just about spot-on. I actually had to watch this video twice literally just because this guy's impersonation of the character/performance is so incredibly on the dot. And for someone who loves the Mad Hatter as much as I do - Peter MacNicol's being no exception - that's definitely going to be something that grabs my attention. It actually makes me a little sad that you will not be doing anything quite like this again, although I completely understand your reasons why, given how ridiculously long this took and how much effort you put into it. His voice for Croc, while not quite as spot-on in matching Khary Payton or Steven Blum, is, as I am already aware, pretty darn great as well. Again, I would sincerely love to see this gentleman play Croc in a real Batman game or film. Even without being an "official" voice for the character, so to speak, he definitely has one of the best portrayals of the character I can honestly say I've heard. (Flattery, I know, but I only flatter what deserves flattering.)
Okay, so...NOW I can actually talk about your work.
In terms of the script and audio editing, you did a pretty bang-up job here. While not perfectly synched word-for-word, it certainly shows your growth and the effort you put into it, and it makes things all the more interesting. You integrated Harley's dialogue rather well, having the character's either say things that led into her lines, or reacted to them, so it never felt that stilted or odd. While not by any means perfect, it's undeniably the most complex thing in this regard you've ever done, and I'm guessing will likely ever do again.
As to the animation, the quality of your work is generally really good, all things considered, and once again, this is undeniably the most active and cinematic piece you've done so far. The angles, the definition, etc. I know I keep saying "you put effort into this," but, gosh-durn-it, sir, the fact this took almost a year to make? I HAVE to point out that it really, REALLY shows, and in the best possible way! There were a few minor moments that felt a bit off; one came towards the start of the video, when Croc first bursts in, and the Hatter just freezes up. It just looked a little odd because he was so very perfectly still. I hate to suggest you could have put even MORE work into this, but some sort of effect to make it seem he was shaking, or just less time on that particular shot, probably would have made it work better. Still, these are but small moments in what is, on the whole, a rather decent animation.
And of course, the subject matter is a lot of fun, too. I love the relationship your version of Croc has with Harley. I honestly wouldn't mind something like this in the comics, or some other take on the Batman universe. XD
ONE VERY MINOR MOAN: "Something a little more...meatier." GRAMMAR NAZI ACTIVATED: it would either be "some more meaty" or "something meatier." Then again, to be fair, I don't imagine dear ol' Waylon Jones had much PROPER schooling...not to say he's a dimwit, but it's a common enough mistake to make. (shrugs)
All in all: I think this is really more of an early Christmas present than a super-late birthday present at this point, but whatever you call it, I am nonetheless pleased you made it, and more importantly, I am sincerely PROUD of you, my friend! Projects like this are the reason I gave up my own ideas of becoming an animator long ago, and the reason why I respect just about anyone who at least tries it. This was a labor of dedication and INTENSE patience, and it really shows. I feel honestly unworthy that you put so much effort into something that, at the end of the day, was more or less for me, and that is a GOOD sign. But even if you took me out of the equation...the fact you would put so much into a project like this - even after you got to a point where it frustrated you to near-Tetch-levels of madness - speaks highly of you, and of your skills, my friend.
I think that's about all I have to say, I think. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU again! This is without a shadow of a doubt your best animation so far. Bravo, my comrade, bravo!
Sincerely,
The Cheshire Cat's Master

Haha, I'm happy it delivered for you, my friend! :)
I had a feeling that you'd ultimately like his Hatter impression, because just based on some of the characters I've heard him play, I was fairly confident he'd deliver there. As for Croc-o, yeah, it was more a reference to the Rchlis version that you heard earlier than Khary Payton, simply because that version is a bit too monstrous for 'nice guy' dialogue. 'XD
I'm truly humbled by your praise in regards to the lip-sync and animation work as a whole. I agree with all the notes and had a few that, in retrospect, I wish I did differently, but as you can guess, I was pretty frazzled by the end. .________.;
Thank you VERY much for all the kind words, mi amigo! I'm very glad it lived up to all the damn hype and delays, and since we're nearing the season, I suppose Happy Early Holidays! XD
