Here is another 'photo-op' I couldn't wait until "Throwback Thursday" to post. Back on Sunday, November 19, 2017, I'd left my Margate (Florida) condo by bicycle - at 5:30 AM, E.S.T. - to head for the Tri-Rail (train) station. Catching the 6:48 AM train, I headed for the Metrorail station, where (at about 7:30 AM) I'd transferred to the southbound train that arrived at my main destination: Downtown Miami - around Miami-Dade College - the location of the annual event, the Miami Book Fair!
About ninety minutes later, I was joined by my amigo (and fellow "Fur Affinity" contributor)
Funimal. After paying a (discounted) Senior Admission fee, we had walked around the entire enclosed area, checking out many concessions that sold books - old and new - and had free giveaways (pens, granola bar samples, etc.). We even stopped off at a 'food court' set up in a parking lot for lunch. Funimal had Thai cuisine, while I enjoyed an Argentinian empanada.
As for purchases, Funimal had found some rare 'Pop!' figures (from Funko) at the Tate's Comics tent. (He bought them for his roommate Henry, who has a huge collection of female characters - such as 'Harley Quinn' and characters from the "Monster High" series.)
As for myself, I'd revisited the Kubik Fine Books Limited concession - where (last year) I'd bought fifteen books in a twenty-volume collection of animal tales by legendary naturalist/storyteller Thornton Burgess - and I'd acquired a few more Burgess books (not from said collection, but of later printed animal tales, with alternate illustrations of characters like 'Peter Cottontail', 'Reddy Fox', 'Ol' Man Coyote', et al). Later on, I'd visited the Scholastic Book tent, where I'd bought an extra copy of the "Zootopia Comics Collection" (from Joe Books), and "There Was an Old Dragon Who Swallowed a Knight" (Scholastic) - which features a 'furry inflation' illustration of the title character (who gets extremely bloated after drinking up all the water of a castle's moat)!
The only disappointment in attending this year's 'book fair' was that there were no big name celebrities to meet on that Sunday. (Earlier in the week, there were such personalities at Dan Rather, Wallace ("The Princess Bride") Shawn, Patti Smith, and Lawrence O'Donnell.) The only big name scheduled to appear there on Sunday was Senator Al Franken, who became a last-minute cancellation... Something to do with 'sexual harassment', or something of that ilk. (But it was just as well. Had Al showed up, his lecture would have taken place at 6:30 PM - which, in turn, would've meant that I'd end up catching the last Tri-Rail train from the Metrorail station at 9:45 PM, and [long story short] I would've gotten home by bike at around 12 Midnight. This happened to me last year, when I was hoping to see Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders - only to end up over ten yards away from him, when he finally left the C-SPAN recording studio bus.)
One of the better moments for me occurred when I took a brief stroll through the Bayfront Park (open-air) Shopping Mall (near the college), and I saw a security officer's unoccupied (golf cart) vehicle, occupied briefly by (of all things) a squirrel! He hopped into the front seat, and fiddled around the steering wheel, and I'd jokingly said to myself, "OMG! He's gonna hijack that security vehicle!" (Of course, said squirrel couldn't drive said cart, as he was too small to handle both the steering wheel and the gas/brake pedals at the same time!) Luckily, I'd brought along a jar of unsalted peanuts - which I'd fed the would-be hijacker (who, occasionally, poked his head out of the cart's wheel well)! This was a helluva lot better than the peacock I saw at the mall last year -http://www.furaffinity.net/view/22005771/ . My only regret was that I didn't think of taking a 'photo-op' of the rascally rodent!
Unlike 2016, I didn't bring a disposable camera with me, to take pictures at the 'book fair'. Instead, I had brought along a tablet with a digital camera feature. However, I didn't take as many snapshots as I'd done last year. In fact, the only 'photo-op' taken in the area of the "Miami Book Fair" was a 'selfie' of 'Funimal' (right) and yours truly. Still, I had a very good time, and I hope to return to Miami for next year's edition...
