It gives him "what he needs" in the form of literature or other knowledge, provided that "what he needs" is available. He doesn't necessarily need a criteria for what he needs when he casts this spell, it simply provides. This spell is very handy for him, since he reads quickly, although he usually needs quite a bit of practice and muscle memory before he can fully grasp a new spell compared to other magicians.
