I know its been a long while since I've let out my frustrations. Ya'll probably didnt miss em XD either way it helps.
I generally enjoyed Overwatch for a while. Though due to certain practices and updates , the game has fallen off for me.
The Overwatch League (OWL) has pushed me further away. If you agree , disagree feel free to let me know.
Sorry for all the yelling!!

Through and Through, gave it another go yersterday. Uninstalled.
For me the game is mostly just the rare shooter that I'm actually good at, so as someone who more or less focuses himself to play the game because it's more or less the only one I can with some semblance of skill, I can understand a lot of your issues. It'd be awesome to have like, a singleplayer Overwatch game, instead of all the story being outside of the game.
The esports stuff at least, funds the teams too, but it is kind of silly. It's sad, I used to want to encourage all my friends to play the game too, but now it's not something I can do. But hey, there's plenty of other games in the sea! Cheers!
I like to think that I'm decent at the game too. That aside I'm glad you could understand my points. I always worry I'm broken or my points are confusing.
Yeah. Most of it made sense. A lot of the issues you have make sense and match my own concerns with the game. I love Overwatch, I really do. I bought a shirt with Moira's face on it for crying out loud. But...it's hard to play. Every game I go in, I get bitched at to play Mercy. The whole game revolving around Mercy now sucks a lot of the fun out. She rewards bad play. yeah though, the game really does need some big change to make it...fun again.
Also still angry that they gave up on CTF so quickly despite the fix for it being so easy.
CTF was hilarious and could have been another fun mode to make for more maps. But...you know....whatever....
But yes, I agree with you. pushing esports can ruin a game entirely. Look at Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.
Except the League skins. That was just... no.
"It's just cosmetics." Is really a bad outlook on lootboxes, in my opinion. Overwatch is a prime example as I just noted. People want skins and the bragging rights that comes with rare items. Blizzard goes out of it's way to incentivize ANY form of customization to be purchased through the law of probability. They are just as predatory as EA, but it gets shrugged off as an 'option' decorated as much as possible to still make you WANT to have it.
And the League is just a fucking joke. Com and casual games are the same thing; Win/lose the choke point and game is over. It is not designed for E-sports in any sense. TF2 has better map design and weapon loadouts offer more interesting strategies. LoL has over a hundred champs and items making the same map still be interesting with thousands of ways you can make plays. Overwatch is smash brothers in a small stage...while listening to two hunks of wood make very cringe puns.
Yeah I have tons of issues with this game too. XD
I actually thought with the introduction of Gold weapons they were gonna make new weapons and or load outs for characters. that way you could have a choice of play between a type of play. Like maybe zenyatta gets more heals for team but loses his discord orb to be a more defensive zen. You know... something interesting. but that hasn't happened.
Pretty sure that won't happen because such items can't be monetized without HUGE fallout.
But to be honest, beside the loot boxes and event games bs (which I completely agree with you) I really enjoy it all, I sometimes play it with a group of friends, mostly on my own, it's super frustrating but I'm deeply invested in the lore of it. The characters are so rich and so lovely I can't stop myself.
But it might also be because I don't have any other games I'm actually really interested in.
Oh and for the league, it's not for everyone that's for sure, I'm honestly surprised that I'm interested to see how "pro players" do but that's basically all.
But hey, I hope you have a game that doesn't stress you out so much and that you enjoy a lot !
oh and they take the fun PvE modes away so that they stay "fresh" to hook you in to coming back to get them again. same with the skins, cept that'll only serve to make ppl duck out every time an event stops. They seem to want to centralize the main focus on their MLG demographic while luring players back in using events and exclusive stuff. it's trash imo.
I think you have missed the point of event-loot. You are NEVER supposed to get EVERYTHING in an event, this way does it feel extra special to have those skins. Besides, you can get them the next event 3 times cheaper.
Alright, lost it when you complain about not being able to play non-multiplayer gamemodes like Junkinstin's Revenge in a game there is all about the multiplayer aspect... so I stopped to listen to the rest of the rant. I think you have just gotten the wrong game in your hands.
Also whats so special about getting event based loot via luck? oh wow, you played during the holiday and got lucky and got a holiday skin. and then waiting to get luck based content. I dont understand this logic. its only special because of timing? not to mention you cant even get the things you want. I got Mei's legendary christmas re color skin. I dont play Mei... SO SPECIAL. wow i got lucky
Im complaining that they are adding content to the game (that people like, stuff I LIKE) and removing it. And the fact that its not against other players. Uprising and Junkensteins revenge i can grab my friends and play something else that isnt so insufferably annoying than playing against other randos.
But hey if all get out of it is playing with your friends and having fun then more power to you. I agree with that statement because if you actually listened past that you would have heard me say how the game can be fun and its well made and if thats all you need then great. but I dont like being sold a product that felt like it was gonna do more with its content rather than just ESPORTS.
Sure it is luck based but they also increase the changes to get the event legendary items so it is "easier" to get them. But I can understand that. I have played the game so much that it isn't an issue as I gather enough currency before an event start (as I never buy the normal stuff as we can just unlock that with normal boxes) that I can at least buy one event-skin I really want. And honestly, it does feel special to open a box and see the skin you wanted there in front of you, but yeah we all have been unlucky and that is frustrating.
Removing it? It is still in the game, you just have to wait for the event to start again. Also, we saw capture the flag become a normal gamemode, who knows if a PvE thing will be permanent as well.
Do not get me wrong! I respect your opinion but I also find it interesting to hear why and what you find awful (probably because I am a game developer and enjoy analyzing good and bad things in games)
I do not understand why them including the E-sports brandings is an issue? I can't even watch it because of my EU timezone, so I just say "fuck it" and continues to play the game like nothing had happened. I don't see how E-sports made the game experience worse, no one is forcing you to buy skins (besides most of them look awful).
Thats essentially how i was in the beginning. When the game came out. for an entire year I was able to get so many loot boxes and dupes and stuff like that I outright Bought all of the first year halloween costumes because i had that much gold. but since they changed the way loot boxes are acquired and how much less i get and how much gold you cant get. I have next to no gold. I get nothing but sprays. i have to play play play play even more now just get ANY kind of reward and that itself is super frustrating.
How is locking the content away for a whole year not the same as removing it? It just shows the things you will never be able to get until you wait for it to open up again. Its removing it from the item pool and removing the game modes from being played. Thus removed from any way of accessing it. Being IN the game doesnt change the point.
As for the Esports thing. its purely a message to anyone like me who buys the game for the game and want more things to make the game enjoyable, that they are not going to concentrate on the casual side of things. It shows me that they dont want to make the game fun and more interesting , they want to make content for Esports. they want to sell you something else than what you bought. This in no way helps me get interested in playing your game. It breaks any kind of flow they had. And proves that the only reason certain changes are now being made so that "HARDCORE" players get what they want over the overall balance of the game. It shows me where there goals for the game are. If they want to concentrate on making it a sport rather than a more engaging and fun game, well then im fucked. XD
I find your issue interesting, so I have to ask, do you one-trick or main a single hero? Or only a selected few? I of course have my own mains but I tend to flex for the situation or what the team needs since we have 26 unique heroes do I want to play them all. I have a friend who mains two heroes (Zarya and Mercy) and she has times where she feels it is getting stale because she doesn't know what to play as she got bored of those two at that time.
That is funny because I felt the same way in the start... until I got every single common and rare item type from the normal lootbox (since you know, when you always get new stuff will there come a point where you have it all if you play enough). Besides, when they made that change did they also increase the chance of getting currency drops so there shouldn't be a difference between the old and the new system, I can understand it feels that way but in theory, should you still get the same amount of currency but also get new stuff all the time.
Removing it means it will never come back, but it does so I don't agree with that point. Besides this makes it exciting when things do come back, my friend that I mentioned before did not get the Zenyatta skin in last year's lunar new year event, and she can't wait for the event to start so she can buy the skin. Since you also enjoy the PvE do I assume that you will go back in and play a bit when the Uprising event comes back? If so they do this system work even if it can be frustrating.
But that is not how it works... sure they are using a lot of manpower on the E-sports aspect, but that doesn't mean that is the only thing they are working on, they probably have 10 other smaller teams working on other things like maps, gamemodes, new heroes and new loot for the normal lootbox which we will actually get soon. I can understand that it feels that way since they have been very "in your face" with all the E-sport stuff so I can understand why you have that opinion on it.
Well of course now YOU possibly can but when i was playing more routinely dupes were numerous and the payout was cheap for dupes. but the grind for lootboxes is such a chore I dont play much and I dont get much reward. Its easier for you to say its easy to get the new things when you are okay with playing the game every day. Mind you, the only reason I bought the Halloween skins that first time was because that entire month of playing the game I DIDNT GET ONE SINGLE SKIN from the event. Not to mention this was after I found out you cant get them after the event ends. I had to buy them because my luck is that terrible. And there lies the problem with me / the game. The only thing that they are adding to the game that i find interesting IS the skins and the events.
The idea that bringing it back makes it exciting eludes me. because as i said before. the things I like to play are only there for that part of the year thus I should wait then to play the game and get excited for something that I know they are just gonna hide away after its done with. That doesnt make me want to play your game, that makes me want to stop so i dont get my hopes up for some fun addition only to be taken away from me. Maybe thats just me. So unless they keep it in , I wont be playing.
But that is how it works. Once you start to show where your goals lie , it paints an impression that they arent in it for their base. they are in it for how much money they can get from marketing and from die hard fans. Ive seen it plenty of times in the games that ive loved ruined by E sports. Street Fighter a franchise I love, After the success of Street Fighter 4 and how that blew up in the E Sports. They dedicated Street Fighter V to be the E-sports fighter. And in doing so they released an unfinished imbalanced mess! With promises that they will support the E-sports scene and that the fans can support their favorite players by Buying E-sport themed related DLC and or costumes. Consumers were begging for more modes of play and better net code and everything! but dont worry its not for them, its for E Sports. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite also went down the same route. Released an unfinished game, people say it plays well (like how Overwatch does) but suffers from imbalance and they were hyping up tournaments and E-sports for the game before the game was released and got in the hands of consumers. That game is also dead in the water right now! There was a game I played Routinely that was a MOBA game called Awesomenauts. They are a little indie developer type company had an extremely fun game. A lot of people were playing it. The moment they started to Re balance the game and changed it to be more like E Sports, the entire player base left! It fell off sooo bad that they ended up making the game Free to Play. Its now just a fraction of its former self. Pushing E-sports is never a good look.
I mean it's not like those normal loot boxes are way too expensive, letting minors gamble and trying to get as much money as possible out of you. Right?
Oh well who cares the game is still super fun! And it's not like they patched my main; Roadhog and made him weak or something like that! >:D
Oh wait...
Ah it is not that bad. I mean I can still play my 2nd main character mercy and do one of those awesome ultimates, where I revive my entire team! :D
Oh wait...
Agh who cares about killing my two mains right? I can find another main and I can also still play one of those awesome 3vs3 with my friends! :D
Oh they patched it so you cannot play that with your friends anymore?
Oh well at least they gifted you 100 tokens for some skins! :D
Oh... just one skin?
Hm ... I am sure you can easily unlock some of them in this event since there are so many of them!
Oh... you can pretty only buy them with cash?
Pfff there are so many, it can't be that expensive then! :D
5 DOLLARS for one skin???
Okay but hey at least half of the money goes to the specific teams! :D
Too bad I don't care about them at all...
But hey they look so cool, I bet if I buy them in bulk packages it won't be that expensive after all! :D
Hmm but which one's should I get...? All those colors are looking neat!
So... How much money do I have to spend?
Let's see 26 heros multiplied by 12 teams, multiplied by 100 dollars for the 2600 token bundle iisss:
ONLY 1'200 euros which is ONLY about 1'440 USD!
...
:D
...
*uninstall* :3
-> I put way too much effort into this...
And yes I was really upset because of what happend to my two mains Roadhog and Mercy. I still play them despite of the changes. Not that much anymore though...
A good reason to not participate in this event just for the sake of getting something new.
I hope I was able to add a little bit of fun to the whole discussion! ^^
Now keep in mind I find Overwatch has gotten stale and is kind of mediocre regardless.
It's been said or hinted at that Overwatch has been aiming for a piece of the E-sport cake since it's inception. Blizzard knew there was money to be made just selling a hyped up AAA game but they also knew(mostly from Starcraft II) that there's SHITTONS of money to be made over years and years if you can get that game in Esports.
All the changes around lootboxes and events, are pretty much all there to incite/force people to buy lootboxes, to invest more than the base price of the game.
I heard from another game company (Riotgames regarding LoL) that there is such a thing as a "hangover effect" in video games, were if a fun gamemode (that deviates from the normal game mode) is around for too long eventually when people play the basic game again they don't find it fun anymore and simply stop playing the game. This might be the sources of Overwatch timed event gamemode, and the rotation of gamemodes in arcade, or it might be something else entirely.
So overall, most off blizzard decisions regarding Overwatch are based on 1 thing : Make as much money as possible.
Now don't be fooled, Blizzard is a huge company, and much like EA they have A LOT of experts from all field and all the data they need to know that any changes they decide to make even if players complain, they still come out on top money wise.
On a different kind of not but still kind of money related, the rift that exist between the game lore(comics and trailers) and the gameplay (the game itself).
Now once again I'll base this on League of Legends, you see for years Riotgames tried and tried to make the lore of their champions (heroes) and the game itself work together, making it as cannon as possible. Before finally after years of confining their lore creation to the rigidness of the game setting itself, decided to make everything that happens in the game non-canon, the champions themselves existed at various eras of their world called Runeterra but them fighting eachothers in some magical arena to show their skills to the world never happened.
Now to be fair Blizzard very quickly pointed out that what happens in the base game isn't canon (obviously you wouldn't have S76 and Reaper fighting on the same side) and their spinets of conversations are essentially "what if they DID fight together?".
Truthfully the base game itself is really not adapted to be reconciled/married with the lore itself. The only way to make the "lore playable" would be to make a solo campaign (and blizzard said they'd want to give it the same amount of polish they usually do all their games which would be the same as making a whole entire new game essentially for free because they probably know not enough people would pay for storymode DLC of Overwatch, at least not compared to the money they'd make if they can get Esports Overwatch working)
So yeah, in the end, it's all about making money, surprise surprise. =P
The hangover effect makes sense too. which is my biggest gripe. i had more fun doing the event based stuff than just grinding against other players.
in other words blizzard is "making it make money" https://youtu.be/bybkLlNbaaw?t=13s
uugh
i also come from an era where you made your OWN skins, so you had your own presence in a game.
the game is kinda stale too, there isn't too much you can do with the format that OW has taken.
its either cap point or cart push. CTF kinda doesn't work 6v6 and with someone who can fly or break the game type with their abilities to get around better than others, i just don't like it.
its funny though, you really can't increase the team count too much higher without ruining the game as a whole.
the whole esports thing is junk since they keep changing how characters work via updates and it just sucks.
when i was really really good at shooters, it was the 90s and it was GO FAST and KILL FAST, grab the flag and hop all the way home.
there was no updates because everyone was on the same level of play, just you, the weapons and your skill and knowledge of the map.
whenever i do play OW though, i can get a feel of when we are gonna win or lose. its a team effort and when your team isn't pulling it together, you wonder why you bother even trying to win.
straight forward map with possibly the best music you can just listen to for hours and hours.
And event specifics are grappling hooks that will be annoying as fudge to evade or the like.
Cosmetics are only good for so long (And it would be a problem if there are weapons or power heroes in there.) as it reminds you of how much can't be unlocked during certain times.
And balance, well I'm going to say this now: Most important and when it focuses on things not meant to be experienced by everyone means that this game is trying to send someone overboard.
And on the bright side, the lootbox plague might be ending soon, thanks to EA provoking many countries into looking into whether video game lootboxes should even be legal.
This does make me wonder... what the hell happened to the days when our reason to play games was because we liked having fun, not to get more stuff inside the game?
But in all seriousness, companies have been twisting games into casinos lately, and AFAIK Bethesda's the only one producing AAA games that DON'T have a multiplayer component, or BS lootboxes (Wolfenstein and Fallout 4 being the latest), although the cracks of greed are starting to show in Fallout 4 and the... fifth release of Skyrim? with that paid mods system they're implementing. I don't want that creation club, I want it gutted, I want Bethesda to keep their mitts off of mods before they go and remove the capabilities for the average consumer to make a mod, and reserve the GECK for those they're paying to make content for their games
So we can get rid of this mentality playing to get stuff.
I might play here and there for friends when they invite me but not as much as I did when i first got it. I have dozens of games I've yet to even start up.
It's the same shit in a different game. Typical Blizzard though.
Anytime the power of the pocket is implemented, a game loses me. Anyone who has disposable income or has mommy and daddy buy them whatever they want gets the unfair advantage. Money should be for looks only.
I remember at certain points when i was playing Winston how pretty much D.VA was essentially just a better more powerful Winston. He was just terrible. Roadhog could do everything. they didnt know what to do with McCree.
But totally understand
But after Overwatch, I feel even more that it would be a mistake.
This is the thing that ticked me off the most about Overwatch though.
Blizzard has a program running in it's matchmaking that looks at your win/loss ratio, and determined on that ratio it matches you up with differently skilled players.
It's goal is to keep you at a perfect 50/50 win/loss ratio, and that pisses me off the most.
Do you know how many times I've been matched up against like...four or five silver portraits on the other team, yet the highest player we got on ours is a two star? Too many to fucking count.
The fact the game is rigging the results before it even begins really kills the play ability for me. Yes, I understand you'll get silver portraits ever other game. But when they're not partied up and all are on one side and not evenly distributed between teams? It really pushes your hand.
I really want to like the game. The characters, the lore, the shorts, the comics, hell I even have multiple pieces of my character dressed like my favorite character McCree. I even put up with the loot box bull shit because it doesn't change the game play, but gives you some bad ass skins. But when you tamper with my experience playing the game? That, that is when I will start to get put off by your title.
I've gone back to playing TF2. Keeping it to 9 classes keeps the game cleaner. It's harder to fuck up the meta by adding a weapon because weapons usually fit the style of the weapon they are replacing. Also it's easier for me to enjoy a game when I've had over 1000 hours to get good at it...
Also why the fuck does Overwatch remove gamemodes when an event is over? Maybe I want to play that horde mode map again. Maybe I liked Lucioball. FUCK
TF2 and Splatoon 2.
add me on steam? >U<
Thank you for your input though. it makes sense!
The way Overwatch handles it's event-based/seasonal content is the worst, most obviously money-grubbing way to go about it. It's even worse now because they reduced the odds you'll get duplicates (that should be a good thing, but when your only source of credits is duplicates, it means you're chances of getting credits are reduced). On top of event skins being triple the price of normal skins, you basically *have* to buy loot boxes in order to get the skins you want.
So at this point, I ignore all the seasonal skins. My friends and I still get together and play (Moira is a really fun new character), but I probably wouldn't play if I didn't have someone to party up with.
I'll give them credit for adding new characters like Moira, but then I see how they handle character updates (especially my girl, Mercy) and I'm left wanting.
I like Overwatch, but it and Blizzard need some tough love right now.
I hope Overwatch doesn't end up having so many characters that it has this issue, I don't know how many they plan to add....
How could I ever feel ''good'' about playing a game if it spoon feeds me? I played to level 60. stopped, I havent even prestiged once.
