Thats awsomehttps://o.oguessing the shoulder straps and those cables link into the armatures along the tail and pull it from side to side as you walk/twist?
problem with that is if you sit down you naturlay pull on the wires a whole bunch and it makes it rather tigh if you sit up, so any more tigheting of the cords would make sitting down to uncomfurtable.
also there is a bit of technique to this and since im very new to it myself i exagurate my movments when more subtle motions would still work.

right now im just decent at making the inturnals to the tail, and mostly to my demensions, but i would love to start making these to sell, but one big problem with this is when you use regular tail foam and fur to give it the right size and shape the fur and foam drasticaly dampens the mobility of the tail.
Im working on a new type of fur (atleast to me : P)
that should be able to give the right length size and shape and allow for perfect mobility in the tail.

You could just do what I do when I fill tails, I just use simple polyfil. You can pack it how tightly or loosely you want it, but still give you more movement then foam.
But I must say, that is the coolest thing I have ever seen. Do you think it would be possible to just build the insides and send it out to me and I could put my fur around it? I would hate to give you all of that extra work, the insides seems like it would be a bitch to deal with even without the issue of putting fur on it.

wow, i got so much more posative feedback than i expected and so soon after posting this ^^
well for a rough estimate.
i for just the inturnals (which would actually allow you to fur it the way you see fit, or get someone who is better at it than me to do it : P)
for the parts
i spent about $120 on all the parts for this and about 5 days working on it.
then again im lazy and didnt spend a ton of time on it furring each day : P
ughh, i dont know how much i would charge for my work hours on this kinda thing so the best guess i can give is maybe $170, maybe more.
there arew a few kinks i need to work out but should be fixed in my next ones.

ya, stuff adds up FAST
3 things of u-nails, 4 things of metal cord stops, a nylon belt, a leather knife holder, a new razor blade, 3 5feet long steal cords for the inturnal cable, 2 7feet long steal cablres for the anamatronic cords, a hammer, 2 new drill bits, and 2 new things of ultra epoxy, and 3 different size wodder dowel rods.
well actually that was for the first stuff i bought, so actually it would be cheaper since i can use some of the stuff again
so it would prolly be around
$90-$100
got a little ahead of myself with that first post ^^;;

My question is - can it be done on much thicker tails? It's a fantastic design for those of us with small, light, thin tails - but what about much thicker dinosaur tails? I know you said you're looking in to design revisions and all, but dinosaurs and dragons aren't furred...
hmmm, a dino/dragon tail could be tricky making.
like depending on how think people would want the bones, (the biggest dowel rodes i could find were 2 inch's) and there is also the problem of how to make it stick out behind the person instead of it naturally flowing straight down.

I figured of course dino/dragon tails would be really pushing the limits of this design. I was still curious though. I'd certainly be interested if you could prove a workable design though. Personally, I'd opt for a half sticking out/half flowing straight down approach, but then, you probably meant that.
I'm currently making a 'dragon tail' which will behttps://1.5meters long. Due to the complexity, articulation, and the need to have it 'hover' above the ground, a good deal engineering will be going into it's construction. I can say this much, a lot of lathing, milling and tig welding will be involved. But once finished, should look and move very accurately according to the body's motions, with out batteries or electronics. Watch my profile for more info in the comming weeks.
you can make the tail as long as you want, but you cant put the anamatronic wire end to far down the tail or you wont get much movement.
My origonal tail before this one though opnly had the bones and no anamatronics, which worked great for just a dangly tail that was still very realistic, and actually that takes like no time at all to make.

I wonder, could this be made into a shorter tail? Say, around knee level.
It would be awesome for a hyena tail, since arching a bit would curl it like a hyena does.
Plus, for thicker tails, like foxes or wolves, longer fur can be used to make it like the real thing, since a wolf's tail isn't as thick as the fur, just the thin bones under it.

mhmm, im actually making a tail around 6 inches shorter than in the video right now, and it can be made even shorter if necacary.
As for the fur delema, i have a person willing to group together to make custom fur for these kinda tails that would allow for 0 foam stuffing and pure fur length ^^
(i havnt finalised anything with him though, its just a good option of he can)

Holy crap that's impressive... I totally want one to put into a new tail for my fursuit.
Now the sitting down issues, could that be fixed by putting in high tension springs to allow you to sit without stretching the cables or causing discomfort? Or will it not be possible that way?

Good job overall - however keep in mind that Animatronics is the use of electronics in motion, usually involving digitial control and preprogramming. What you're using is Remote Articulation, where a simple wire by use of pulling is used to remotely control movement.
Fantastic work! I love the simplicity of it all. I have always been a fan of puppetry and animatronics. Bravo!
One question for you, I am planning on my first partial suit for my Ratgirl character (she is all over my profile), do you think this could translate to a rat tail like hers, or would it not be able to be so thin?
I do hope you end up selling these once you get the hang of it, and I wish you well in your endeavors!
