See, I love harmless memes. I’m constantly getting them from and sending them to my friends. The issue with the “do you know de wae” meme was perfectly summarised in a post I saw on twitter that said “I can sum up why this meme is awful in four words: black man talks funny”.

So then, it is wrong to find any humor in that meme?

You know, I had a whole thing typed up about my opinions on racist humour with various examples, but I’m tired and no matter what I say, it’s not going to change anyone’s mind about anything. I don’t think racist humour is funny because <insert athe Onion article about “I don’t know how to explain that you should care about people”>, but I’m not in charge of how other people think or what other people find funny.

So, if you find humour in “black man talks funny”, go ahead and laugh. Just remember Charlie Chaplin: “My pain may be the reason for somebody’s laugh; but my laugh must never be the reason for somebody’s pain”.

Literally the only thing that contains anything resembling humor in that meme is "black man talks funny". It's the difference between making a joke and making fun of someone. This piece of trash is firmly in the latter.

A got a message from a buddy of mine about this sketch and he was trying to justify why it was funny because the dude who made it thought it was hilarious. I explained how it wouldn’t be “funny” if the dude had used any other accent and that’s why it’s just “black man talks funny” and he just went silent for a while. When he finally got back to me he said he’d never thought of it like that and that I was right.

Dude. No, dude, you're tired? I'm tired! Every kid in every school I've worked at since that meme became a thing asks me that. Multiple times a day.
