Plus, plot twist: Sharky boy is actually a girl. (I have no way to back that up other than him/her saying that his/her gender is a secret.)

Torp knew from the moment they were introduced - the staring match in the cell - that Battu was female. He's very perceptive at spotting other people's emotions and tells.

I'm a little lost. Does Battu know this guy? Is his name Kayrun? Was he someone or something else in the past?

That was a mistake on my part the word "Kayrun?" means "What?" in English. The mistake I made was not replacing that word with the English one, ill make sure to fix that, because it's not necessary to say that single word in another language.

A lot of writers try to milk tension between two characters for drama long after the drama has dried up and the plausibility has gone off. It's refreshing to see development like this.

It's because the prison is meant for males only. Because my species is so rare, they have no records on the species and its inner workings so they guessed male because of the actions and personality.
