A dragon can lose scales on many different occasions such as fighting, scratching, crashing through the trees, mating, ect., and they do grow back in a few weeks, but it takes 20 years for a scale do develop to it's maximum thickness, strenght and beauty, after which it falls off and get's replaced by a new one.
Bergo finaly lost the last scale that was on him since the day he hatched and he is not feeling very happy about it.
