ATTENTION PATREON CREATORS -- New Membership Pages Coming
If you are a current Patreon member you will probably miss this, and anyone with a creator account there will be effected.
Usually when a potential subscriber who isn't a Patreon member is sent to your page, they see your Overview (where you pitch why they should support you, what they get for each reward level, and a video if you thought to add one).
IMPORTANT CHANGE: Patreon is slowly rolling out new "Memberships" pages, and anyone who isn't logged in will be taken there instead.
SO WHAT? The new pages are essentially sales forms. Patreon is gearing up to send your potential subscribers COLD to a sales form instead of warming them up first with your pitch.
Imagine going to the website of an individual creator for the first time and hitting a sales form as the front page, before you see anything else. You might wonder why you are being asked for money before you are shown what the creator is offering... but not for long because every browser has a back button.
Patreon is doing this because they are trying to get away from being a tip jar and cement themselves as a subscription service. I get it, and I hope they manage to make the change.
In the meantime, here's two things you can do:
Change every link you can fromwww. patreon. com/YOUR-PAGE-HERE to www. patreon. com/YOUR-PAGE-HERE/overview as this will bring new people to your pitch instead of the order form.
Rewrite your rewards. If you were lazy and just used bullet point lists now is a good time to add a short half a paragraph in the description for each reward, and also an eye-catching graphic.
This is a slow roll out so you may have trouble seeing what I'm talking about.
I screen captured
Karno's Memberships page because it was the only one up when I needed an example, I don't have one of my own, and he will probably enjoy a free advertisement.
TL;DR: Don't panic, Patreon is trying to be helpful again. This will effect creators only when they try to get new people who aren't current Patreon members to sign up. You may have to do some Internet link housekeeping and rewrite your rewards to be more descriptive.
