This piece is yet another slice of didacticism, served hot and bitter, and which is mostly inspired by a rather cynical thing I have had said to me several times in my life, and by several different people: ‘You know you’re in the real world, when the bad guys usually win.’
Over the years, I’ve had cause, again and again, to see just how true that really is. A couple of other smaller inspirations come from a quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln: ‘It has been my experience that those with no vices have very few virtues,’ as well as to another taken from Robert Heinlein’s 1973 novel: Time Enough for Love, specifically: ‘Maybe Jesus was right when he said that the meek shall inherit the earth — but they inherit very small plots, about six feet by three.’ Finally, I have referenced a line in the (mostly horrible) film adaptation of the comic book series ‘Hellblazer’, which was released in 2005 under the title: ‘Constantine’, and which starred Keanu Reeves as the lead character: ‘God's a kid with an ant farm, lady. He's not planning anything.’
