so having a character become infected as they are being pulled in is useful important for 2 reasons 1)makes "rejection" a non-issue 2)makes it much easier for them to survive inside, so well in fact this could be used as a life support system for a character that might be reduced to a chunky salsa from fragmentation grenades or a woodchipper if done fast enough.
