Greetings everyone, here's kinda the first look of one of the final members of the supporting cast; a character who shows up initially to antagonize Griggs, though eventually ends up providing both a supporting and antagonizing role to various characters in the plot.
This commission was created by the professional, friendly, fast, and talented artist
Tabia who has been fantastic for helping me create new "looks" for characters as I come closer to completing the character roster.
With Minerva here I wanted to emphasize again that the Volterrans are meant to be a very Roman inspired type faction culturally, though brought into the modern age with some attributes of modern civilization added in (such as mass broadcast media, and corporations for example).
Minerva is an ambitious character, like many Volterrans she strives to find opportunities to advance her career and win glory and profit for her corporation "Apex Mercenary Corp"; this is both a positive and negative trait for her, on the one hand it often motivates her to be very competent, hard working, and to pursue new strategies and opportunities. On the other hand however, it can sometimes cause her to come across as blunt, uncaring, and occasionally cutthroat.
My favorite parts of this are the attributes that blend the more modern elements in her design with some more classical, Roman themed additions; I'm really happy with the overall look of Minerva here though I certainly need to make sure that not every character has this much detail or it's going to be a nightmare to edit, and render. That said, I've been happy overall with the gradually more complex universe I've been building here.
Anyway, hope you guys enjoy the concept art; the main artist has created the official version of a few of these, and I am working to render them out, but that takes much longer as I have to create the Flash version and make sure it's free of errors before posting it here. There should be some new stuff here soon though, and you guys will get to see how the official versions differ from their base concepts.
Thanks everyone, I hope you enjoy! Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments below.

While Agron is not a historical leader in the Rebellion, his role in the series takes on the historical context of Castus.
Historically, the real Castus was said to be a Roman who had served in the Roman legions. At some point in his career, he deserted and was later captured, resulting in his recycling as a gladiator in the school of Gnaeus Lentulus Batiatus in Capua (while other conflicting sources say he was of a Gaul tribe). On the show, Castus is portrayed as a former member of the Cilician pirates (led by Heracleo), considering the historical role of Castus has been overtaken by Agron.
So, in a way, Nasir is involved with a character based on a historical figure as well as a character bearing the name of the historical figure. Interesting to know, right?

Indeed, they definitely took some liberties here and there with the characters and what roles they served, though I tend to find the further back in history you go the more obscure the details become; they weren't even sure if Spartacus was actually from Thrace or not, but there's that rumor, so the show goes with it.
I think my favorite thing about the show is that even though I know historically how it ends they manage to keep it interesting and actually maintain the dramatic tension by keeping all the characters well developed and multi-layered, you want to see how things turn out for them even if you know more or less what's "supposed" to happen.
But yeah definitely interesting information, I'm glad some of my viewers are so well versed in history; though that could explain why my written stuff sometimes does better than my visual stuff, as it's usually inspired by and based on history.

This summed up my thoughts on the story and its connections to history too!
Also, what is ironic about Gannicus declining Crixus' offer to join his side in their vengeance rampage to the capital is that the historical Gannicus DID go with him and die in that battle. Instead opting to stick with Spartacus in his journey to freedom over the Alps.

Indeed, it's basically a drama with kinda a historical theme to it; though if it helps people learn a bit about history or become more interested in that sorta thing then I figure it's purpose is well served.
I remember reading about that after I wanted the last few episodes and thought that was a bit odd as well; though considering that in real life both Spartacus and Crixus tended to rampage through Roman villages/towns killing everyone they kinda had to give characters a bit more moral of a side to balance them out.
Remember that even though we think of the story of Spartacus as a fight for freedom against tyranny, and Spartacus's army as liberty seeking freedom fighters, that's not really the case; as soon as they earned their freedom they looted, pillaged, and killed as many Romans as they could. But that wouldn't make for a very good story so it's been changed many times over the centuries.
Anyway, it was definitely a good show, one of the more entertaining ones and I wish there were more like it. One that I've found myself really enjoying lately has been "The Last Kingdom", the main character is a bit of a fictional write in, but it does a good job kinda going over some basics of what England was like during the Danish invasions of 800's AD.
Talk to you later.
