Sanita and I were discussing this just the other day, here in Salem. While I concede that the Bombastic, larger-than-life, continental Gomez of Raul Julia is definitely more outright eye-catching and possibly fun, Astin's portrayal of the creepy, hunched and somewhat detached Gomez is FAR more accurate to the comics and the original character.
I feel that both men give an absolutely knockout performance. I can't really say that one is better than the other as they portray practically two separate characters.
