his piece appears to be about gambling, at least on the surface; however, what it’s really about is a far more general theme of making bad life decisions over and over again. I’ve certainly been more guilty of that than most, and even worse, continuing to make them, perhaps cherishing the tragically mistaken and delusional belief that repeating bad decisions will somehow bring different results over the long term.
Gamblers call this ‘chasing one’s losses’, and economists term it as the ‘Sunk-Cost Fallacy’, whereas the wiser person tends to know when to cut their losses. Of course, as we all know, true wisdom is a rare thing…
