How many black people live in Great Britain, exactly? Given I've never scene a black individual with a british accent, I imagine that's a very small number. Considering that I don't really blame Tolkein or Rowling for lack of black characters. they're both british, and Harry Potter even takes place in england, so it doesn't surprise me.

I know this is an old post, but there are hundreds of black people who live in England. Also, the person above me who said the accent thing... British black people still have English accents, lol. That's just pure ignorance to think just because they're black they wouldn't sound English. :/ [that's not directed to you, though].
Considering the majority of people on these art sites are American, it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people wouldn't know that England has a fair few black citizens. As well as the fact that America doesn't show much of English TV programmes on TV like they do here in Australia.

I would find it incredibly offensive if I lived in the united states for all my life, but instead of being called American like all my friends I would be called African-American.

Yes there was. The black kid in the movie is Lee Jordan, and I specifically remember Rowling stating that he's black, in the book. I frogot which, but it was early on, with a "Hey, remember? He's friends with Fred and George" mention. "Oh, by the way, he's black." Mace Windu (Kingsley) shows up much later, and I think there were African, presumably black witch doctor extras mentioned in the book at the Quiddich World Cup.
Also, I found in one of my (hardcover editions) copies, Dumbledore's name was misspelled once.

Racism when use in qaunity and apporaite times is fine. Beside, its not like black people aren't rasist against whites, or mexians, or for that matter pretty much there racism for everything. Having an all white cast isn't racist. Having an all white cast because you hate black people is. But I would think that having a few black people in your cast because you want to appease people who might think you are racist, is also racist. And to assume that someone should include black people in their story is also racist, because you think that someone should be included simply because of their race.
Though I suppose for a movie cast of extras, you should really try to put in a realistic sampling of the world around you. Meaning if you have x amount of people in the world you should have a scaled back number of those people in the melting pot of extras.
So maybe it is a little racist. Though unless the book specifically describes a character as a certain ethnicity or by a certain skin color, I don't see how you can tell what race they are anyways.

I know that it's supposed to be funny, but if you keep in mind that Rowling is british and Harry Potter takes place in england, plus the fact that there aren't as much black people in england than there are black people in the US, then the whole point of the joke is just stupid and makes no sense.

i can't agree with that accusation, i myself am a writer but i never write in a black or brown character, but at the same time my closest friend is native himself. you can't make an assumption based off the lack of black people, that's called prejudice and can get you into a lot of pointless arguments. ;3

Actually, after reading the comments in this section, I gotta say, as a black person myself, who's uncle was a black panther. I'd like to clear up this common misconception. Blacks, we're all different, some get offended if you call them "african american", and prefere AFRO- American. Some get offended if you call them black. Whatever. Depends on the person. Me, I don't care.
As for black brits, there's actually a lot of them, just like there's Koreans living in Russia. Or people from Indians (from india not native american) and Japanese living in Jamaica (yes they develope a jamaican accent). They identify themselves by where they live.

Thia was incredibly funny, but I take offense when you say that J.K. Rowling is racist. You have to see Hogwarts as being a micro-representation of England. There aren't that many black people as there are white people, in the same way that there aren't that many Indians, Asians, etc. Also, you have to remember that Rowling mainly focused on Harry's year, and there was only one black kid, Dean Thomas, two Indians, the Patil Twins but they count as one, and there was probably an Asian in his year (as appears in early drafts of Rowlings work) as Cho Chang is in the year above him. The rest are "white" people from all over England with different heritages and blood lines. So, since you've obviously haven't looked into Harry Potter as well as you should have, you cannot say that Rowling is racist against black people.
