As a rule of thumb, spacefaring species almost always stand on top of their specific food chain, even when these species are entirely herbivorous. The Capisci are the prime exception to this rule, and is still considered a prey species despite how advanced their civilization and technology is, and are even considered a delicacy by many of the nearby spacefaring nations.
Capisci were originally an amphibious species living on the predominantly watercovered planet now known as Drai, but things changed when Drai was colonized by an ancient spacefaring species, which modern Capisci refer to as "Nieukōhmnerrz", although their real name has been lost in history. These "Nieukōhmnerrz" decided to domesticate the Capisci as livestock, eventually using their bioengineering technology to make them tastier and more nutritious, as well as making them reproduce and grow faster while being generally docile. However, one day these "Nieukōhmnerrz" disappeared, their current status unknown, and the now delicious Capisci were free to re-enter the ecosystem.
The Capisci's delicious nature oddly did not become a drawback, because most of their predators didn't need to eat as many Capisci as they would have if they hadn't been engineered, and since Capisci corpses don't decay(due to possessing natural preservatives) a lot of predators could survive on a scavenging diet, thus making most predator species as a whole less aggressive.
Eventually the Capisci developed sapience, and by studying the ruins left by the "Nieukōhmnerrz", they quickly learned to apply the scientific method and eventually developed spaceflight, and even adapyed some cultural traditions from the "Nieukōhmnerrz", like how they write pieces of their history the walls of their buildings. However, Capisci were still a "prey" species, and much of their culture is a reflection of this. In fact, their predominant religion claims that Capisci need to be eaten(dead or alive) by a predator species in order to properly "move on", a belief that might have started because Capisci corpses can't decay and another method of disposing of them would thus be needed.
Capisci are a rather isolationistic society when it comes to their interstellar politics, and mostly prefer to keep to themselves, to the point where they've even bribed most of the local interstellar nations to keep out of their business, with said bribery coming in the form of exported Capisci corpses. They have no tolerance when it comes to aliens living inside their borders, but some Capisci have actually migrated into other nations, claiming to have done so out of curiosity more than anything else, suggesting that this anti-alien policy doesn't actually have anything to do with xenophobia.
They might not have the strongest political influence, but the effect that Capisci have had is still undeniable. To some, the Capisci are a reminder that no matter how advanced our technology is, no matter how intelligent we are, we're still animals, and to some they're just a delicious meal.
