If this internship is being run through an accredited university that is receiving public money, this internship is illegal. I got the sense that Cooper and Andy were attending a business college at a university: There's no way this internship is legal. The first thing I do is rat this dude out to my professors, but all the ins and outs of knowing how an internship is supposed to work (i.e. many people--perhaps the majority of people--tend to assume that all internships are unpaid which isn't true) can be tough to navigate.
What I think is happening, based on how the law works, is that he's telling Cooper that he's going to be working an unpaid internship while telling the school or third party organisation through whom he found Cooper that he is paying Cooper and then just pocketing Cooper's pay, himself. There are RULES that you have to follow to have an unpaid internship:
Six-Part Test for Unpaid Internships
The vast majority of interns working at for-profit organizations must be paid at least the minimum wage and any applicable overtime. Technically, paid interns are temporary employees and treated virtually the same as regular employees with respect to labor law. But you may legally hire an unpaid intern if the following six criteria are met:
1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment. Right off the bat, I don't think that this applies to Cooper's situation here though I SUPPOSE there is an argument to be made that favours the bear's perspective. On the other hand, the bear is suggesting to Cooper that he take a semester off from school--the very school that would be funding the internship in the first place! So yeah, this offer problematizes the internship status under which he would be working.
2. The experience is for the benefit of the intern. This is clearly not the case--Cooper's expected to be working full time.
3. The intern does not displace regular employees but works under close supervision of existing staff. Also a strike against it: Cooper is going to be working 30 to 40 hours FOR FREE?! Get the fuck out of here--there's no way he could be working that many hours without displacing someone.
4. The employer providing the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded. This is flagrantly not true. What he's offering Cooper is basically slave labour.
5. There is no guarantee of a job at the conclusion of the internship. Well, THAT certainly seems to be true here . . . .
6. Both parties understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the internship. That CLEARLY was not Cooper's understanding going in. Even though he does technically ratify the agreement at the end of this discussion to work for no money, it's an illegal thing that's being done. THERE IS NO WAY THAT THIS IS LEGAL AND IF I WERE A LAWYER, I'D HAVE A FIELD DAY SUING THE FUZZY BROWN HIDE OFF THIS FUCKING ASSHOLE'S BACK!!!

Actually about number 3 is more about where one lives than how much of their time is taken up. For example, my brother took up a type of internship in Texas (erโฆ different state). It was kind of a mistake because the guy (while nice at first) turned out to be a jerk to my brother. Now suddenly my brother was out on his own away from friends and family. Luckily, my brother had enough connections that he wasn't completely out of luck, but had he not had said connections (as well as a very real job opportunity), then he'd be screwed.
TL;DR: "Displacement" would be he's going to school in one city, but suddenly he's interning across the entire state.
Besides that, I'm in complete agreement with you. And this Cooper was top class speaker/debater. Guess it doesn't translate very well into negotiations, especially when you lack any sort of confidence in yourself and/or areโฆ (best word I can think of is) "desperate/overly-eagar" enough.

I really don't know what to believe, going through the comments. I wouldn't know this stuff. I went to college, not university, and I don't know shit about internship or apprenticeship (assuming there's a difference). This dog might be an ass, not just from getting private dances as auditions. I wonder if Cooper is afraid to be a worse man than his father was.
alright
so fletcher seems to be trying to milk some free labour
cool
fletcher's taking a risk, in presuming that cooper actually is the man for the job to begin with, though
no?
dammit, feltcher.. ..i was wanting to like you, giving you the benefit of the doubt that you were simply more "liberal" on your sexuality, and maybe a simple 'hard ass' / no bullshitter
rather, i'm now noting you may be willing to be two-faced.. ..to a kiddo who isn't quite as street-savvy as you
?
ยดkinda like, now, you're "The Andy" โ eh?
