This is a fairly unique piece to add to that growing list of Beast Wars art I'm making as of late, as this is based on one of the characters from the show...sort of.
To preface, the Fox Kids version of Dinobot (bottom one) is the one I actually have. Of course, I couldn't help but do some variations of this one drawing. I strictly wanted to base the art on the toy; the only reference to the show I made was having the pose channel one of his lines - "I like to beat my opponents the old fashioned way - BRUTALLY!!!" And I know it's not really supposed to be that way, but I liked the idea of having the Raptor arms being splayed out.
(And speaking of, yes, I'm aware the Raptor mode is horribly inaccurate. But that's the way the toy is, so that's the way I wanted it to look.)
As for the versions themselves?
- The first one is the original Dinobot from 1996. One thing I really liked about a lot of the older Beast Wars toys was when they'd have translucent parts, and Dinobot was certainly one of them, which is why I felt like acknowledging it. Plus it prompted a challenge to portraying it this way. I literally colored the line art of the legs, torso, and "mutant head" halves a dark orange, while leaving the color layer normal. Gives it a bit of a glow, too, which is kinda neat.
- This one from 1997...probably not too many remember fondly, due to suffering from Gold Plastic Syndrome - it's Grimlock! And yes, he is literally THAT Grimlock, as his toy bio flat-out says so. But GPS aside, I do dig the color palette. It's a nice touch that he has spots instead of stripes. Although, it is kinda funny how much the show "re-wrote" Dinobot's design. Nowadays, this design is usually reserved for Grimlock (albeit his Raptor mode updated to have feathers), while depictions of Dinobot always draw from the show model. And yeah, even drawing him, trying to channel Dinobot as much as possible, it's funny how much this design is SO not the same character.
- As I said above, this is the Fox Kids reissue from 1999 (that was prolly supposed to be called "Live Wire" Dinobot, but never made it to the packaging and such), which I actually have, and naturally, was my drawing reference. I do kinda like how much more "Jurassic Parky" he feels with these colors, which he (and Grimlock) were more or less references to as "Velociraptors".
