From what I understand, The Pokemon Company wanted Detective Pikachu to be voiced by Danny DeVito in the game, but he wasn't interested, so they had to get a sound-alike. I don't know if they approached him again for the movie, but honestly, I'm glad they went with Ryan Reynolds in the end.
