I really wonder where this character of Emery comes from? I could imagine that you'd have a hard time to create a realistic 40 something year old homosexual guy like that and make him seem realistic...
I mean, not that I'd think that he seems unrealistic. I'm not in that age to tell what someone in that age might actually be like. What their dreams might be and so on but how do you imagine his character
to be? Are you working from references and stories of older people or how do you make him work for you? :)
Best regards
Monoko

Being a little above mid-30s myself and having a bunch of friends that are up to about 10 years my elders, I can say that his feelings are pretty valid.
While he has the "daddy dog" thing going, unless you're a bear, your chances of finding someone starts dwindling at around 35, 40 being the general cutoff for most folks.
It's called the "gay death" where you're past an age that unless you're a "daddy" type, a bear or a gym rat, most folks don't seem interested. They go for those types, or they go for younger and more "attractive" (everything being relative, of course).
While there are "success stories" out there that day otherwise, the general feeling I hear at 40+ is that if you're not already in a LTR, you can pretty much kiss it goodbye.
However, of course and it goes without saying, YMMV...
But I would personally tend to agree right now. X3

Hmm I can certainly imagine that to be an issue to people in that age. I really didn't intend to focus
my question on the dating aspect though but more on how you'd write a character that might be hard
to relate to since the character is very different from you as an artist and how you'd work around that
problem or if you are able to do so at all. So that was what my question was actually targeted at.

It's ok. ^^

I know that it might sound a bit harsh but in reality it's really just like in the comic.
Do what you enjoy, meet other people that have the same interests as you. Don't
feel left out just because of this. There is a high chance that you will find someone
for you but you have to be out there for others to find. ;) *hugs* Just don't be afraid.
Things will look up for you if you try. ^.^

My mother is actually friends with a person much like this. He had a wife and kid but felt unhappy for reasons he couldn't understand. It wasn't until he was in his mid to late 30s that he realized that the reason he was unhappy was because he was gay. He might have been repressing it possibly because of a religious upbringing though I am uncertain, I never asked what his family was like.
As a result of this realization he ended up divorcing his wife and leaving her. He's happier now from what I understand.
Since Emery calls himself a "Late Homo" I assume he had a similar realization as my mother's friend. On forum boards I've heard of other people like Emery. Usually they grew up in religious households that led to them strongly repressing their sexuality to the point of just not realizing who they are.

I came to these comics for the porn. I stayed and was blown away to how much I relate to the different characters. Hats off to creating a piece that is 100% naughty furry fun while being 100% very real reflections on emotion, relationships, sexuality, and expectations. Please keep it up! These talking dogs are more 'real' than most things you would see on TV.
