Tail ribbings; a tutorial for mouse, rat, and possum tails
So I was asked not that long ago how I made the ribbing on a mouse tail I made. So here’s a tutorial for anyone that wants it.
First, cut out the tail. Have it all ready to go. Then measure where you want the ribbing to go, and mark it with a little pencil mark (1). I have this nifty blue pencil that comes out in the wash. This makes it so that when you are sewing in the ribs, they are all about the same distance from each other. Now go to your first mark, and fold the fabric on the mark (2).
Now the fun part. Start sewing. Keep the fold right at the foot of the sewing machine, or if you’re hand sewing try to keep about a quarter inch from the fold (3). But don’t freak out too much if it doesn’t stay by the foot. I’ll show you why.
To make this strong so the ribs don’t come out in the wash or while you’re stuffing:
When you come to the end of making the seam, lift the foot without cutting the thread, turn the fabric, and sew the seam again. (4)
See how I’m a little off on the seam at the end? That’s why I told you not to worry too much about it, we’re going over the stitches again. (4.5) I go over the original seam twice, making it a three stitched seam total. All of these are straight stitches, nothing fancy.
End result: 5
Do this for each mark you made. When you’re done, fold the tail so it is ready to be sewn closed. Put the seams towards you so when you turn it inside out it looks right. Here comes the part that is really artistic taste.
To make the folds pop out more on the outside, take the over-lap part of the seam (the fold by the foot) and push it UP towards the belt, not the tip of the tail. This forces the top part of the fabric to stand out further than the portion under the seam. Makes the ribbing more noticeable. However, if you want them even, just fold the seam flat against itself. Like you would with clothing. (6, 6.5).
End result? 7 is with the fold sewn to one side, 8 is with the fold sewn flat.
And that’s all there is to it! Just turn it right side out, and stuff it. Any questions, feel free to ask!
