Oh hey, I made another one. About the same deal as before, just an idea that's been circling in my head for years, and only now adapted into writing.
Medieval Era, no particular country. A large, rather isolated human kingdom resides near an enormous forest. Within the forest lives a race of werewolves, deep down, far away from the humans. They are a peaceful race, and they are able to use light magic to shift into feral form on command.
One day a human strays too far into the forest, and discovers them. He runs away in terror, greatly exaggerates his encounter upon his escape, and thus the humans, out of instinctual terror typical of their kind, create multiple war parties, attempting to destroy the “vile beasts” before they came and ravaged their land.
They charge into the forest, and kill all werewolves that they encounter. The wolves do not fight back, either not understanding the human’s intent until it was too late, or fleeing simply to avoid their wrath. The wolves are driven farther and farther back, their numbers dwindling to a fraction of what they once were.
During a lapse in the humans’ advance, the remaining wolves come together to figure out what to do. A few of them want to fight back, so desperate to preserve their own race that they would abandon their code of peace. However, they are overruled. One wolf then comes up with a completely unexpected idea, shocking everyone. Their shapeshifting magic had only ever been used to shift into feral form, a simple and comfortable process. But many had forgotten that their magic could in fact be used to attain other forms; they had just never seen any need for that until now. His proposal was to shift into human form, and blend in with their invaders. Not to try and overthrow the kingdom or for any other motive, but simply for their own survival.
Many of them are repulsed by the idea of becoming the very race that threatens to destroy theirs, but there is simply no other choice. At the other end of the forest is a large body of water; they cannot retreat any longer. So they all agree to it, reluctantly.
A small party creeps into a human campout, knocks a man unconscious, and brings him into the forest, so that each and every remaining wolf can take a close look, and know precisely what they must become. Eventually, all of them appear to be naked humans, shuddering and teetering, trying to adjust to their new bodies as well as they can. They assemble all of the deer carcasses they can muster, and skin them as best they can to create makeshift clothes. They all agree on a calling card; a tell that they can casually give off to anyone they meet in order to able to recognize each other through their disguise(not yet decided on). The human is quietly returned to his post.
Silently, the wolves in disguise all creep through the brush, barely slipping past the dormant hunting parties unnoticed. Eventually, they begin to split up into smaller groups, in order to appear less suspicious. Whenever groups come upon a village, they sneak around it and approach from the opposite side of whence they came, pretending to simply be foreigners that have yet to learn proper English. It is hardly a seamless process; some are turned away in fear or disgust, while others are largely accepted, but are unable to learn the people’s language or find employment for anyone. More of their kin were lost simply due to starvation, or even occasionally to hostility. But over time, they began to understand human culture and how to follow suit.
Eventually, the ones that remain become one with human culture, completely indistinguishable from normal humans; talking, acting, and behaving like them… some even finding themselves elevated into much higher status due to unusual circumstances. Yet, never once do they forget who they once were. They still often revert to their normal forms whenever the opportunity arises, just to truly feel like themselves again. Some of them can be a little bit careless…
At first humanity as a whole remains ignorant to the wolves’ infiltration; only confused at what happened to the wolves that remained, and at the strange people that arrived in their villages elsewhere. However, there will eventually be some who make the connection, and come up with their own conspiracy theories; that the wolves lived on, and planned to bring destruction upon humanity, along with other various warnings. Fortunately for the wolves, their theories don’t gain very much traction, and they are often thought to be superstitious and/or out of their minds. But if a human were ever to truly witness firsthand what the wolves have now become, there is no telling what manner of events would ensue…
