You can see the sea! It’s over there between the land and the sky! ;-p
After getting up at a reasonable hour for the first time that weekend (jetlag always goes away right before you’re due to come home, ofc), Soba and I headed down to the Mizzen for breakfast. In the knowledge that we would need our appetites tonight, I had a reasonable helping of scrambled eggs, which seemed to be FAR more than the two eggs listed on the menu. Not that I’m complaining, of course.
The closing ceremony was rather long, with the final charity auction rather dragged out for entertainment purposes, but thankfully it delivered a great result. We raised well over C$10,000 for the charity, which was destined to make a lot of rescued cats very happy. We also learned that the con had attracted 2,422 attendees and just shy of 1,000 fursuiters. The theme of next year’s con was announced, taking us back decades to the retro years, to which I am rather looking forward! With the con closed, I was able to bid a final farewell to Soot, before heading to the hotel lobby to wait around for attendees bound for the annual Mandarin dinner, an outing which I have rather missed since my first years of attendance, and so I was eager to get back to some good buffet dining. :)
I went to the restaurant with Soba and Fulminar in the former’s car, and enjoying hearing stories on Toronto’s development along the way. We parked up at a very convenient location, and arrived at the restaurant first. Joined by the rest of the party, we were led to our own private area, and with drinks order we raised glasses to our friendships, to the Guests of Honour, and to Dan for arranging everything. I was after I got my first plate of food that Shiro came to our table and informed us that Toronto Pearson airport, from which I would be departing in a day’s time, was on fire. Beyond my concerns for the people at the airport, my thoughts turned to my own flight out of there. Updated by Uncle Kage, who was heading home that evening, we soon learned that it was Terminal 1 that had a small fire in the security area, but the building had been evacuated, aircraft held on the tarmac, and flights cancelled. That last part was fun to hear, as I’m sure you can imagine. I immediately checked up on my own flight, and saw that it was fine. As such, I continued with my food in relative peace, enjoying the fine company of my friends and great food of the Mandarin.
After a couple of hours we returned to the Westin, and Soba and I chatted in the room for a bit, and the conversation soon turned to what to do on Monday. Recalling that I had promised my ursine friend a steak for getting me a job (long story), and after going back and forth with a few options, we realised that the CN Tower had a rotating restaurant which offered a wide variety of steaks. With the Canadian dollar being low against the dollar and pound, we settled on having an early dinner there before I left for the airport on Monday evening. Plans made, we headed out to the con space individually, and I took some time to look around the dead dog, and had some fun with a couple of fursuiters who were hanging around the con space. With things winding down, I headed for the hotel bar and got myself a cider. I finished it slowly, thinking on all the fun I’d had the past couple of days, and then made my way back up. I then got a message from Soba saying that he and Dan were also at the bar, and so back down I went to enjoy some good time with them. Going on for 1am, my roommate made the right call that we should probably retire, and so up we went for our last night at the Westin.
And thus is the conclusion of the con, but not of my time in the New World! Hope you enjoy!
TL;DR – Woke up and went for light breakfast in Mizzen. Went to Dealers’ Den to catch up with dealers and order final commissions. Walked into charity auction for a bit before returning to Dealers’ Den. Comforted GoH after some unfortunate events. Went to closing ceremony, then out for dinner in the car with Soba and Fulminar. Came back and wondered around the conspace, then met with Soba and DanRaccoon in the hotel bar for a bit before bed.
