Well, I was watching OneyPlays' Pokemon Red series, which they finally finished recently, and at one point something happened which gave me inspiration. They played it on a real cartridge through the Super Game Boy, so being the funny boys that they are, they would occasionally mess around with the colour palettes and stuff. And at one point, this palette popped up which I rather liked the look of. It was light orange, light blue, magenta and dark blue. And I wondered if any of the other 31 palettes looked nice, and yeah, some of them did. I felt like drawing a few characters together using these palettes, and then the Eeveelutions felt like a good fit. Pokemon did have its start on the Game Boy, after all, and the Eevees are perfect for a group shot.
Although SOME of the 32 palettes look nice, not all of them do... seriously, it was a lot more difficult than it should have been to pick one for just 8 characters!! Most of them are just... brown... or yellow... or green and red/orange. And while brown is all very well when I'm drawing Eevee, it's no good when I'm trying to draw 8 colourful characters! Some of the palettes were perfect for the limited-palette look, but there are only THREE bluish ones out of 32. One was perfect for Umbreon, another was perfect for Glaceon, then the last was that first palette I'd seen before so Vaporeon would have to have a magenta head... but it was my only option, so oh well. But overall, I like how the palettes look. There were places I had to compromise or get creative to stick to 4 colours but still have it look good, like how normally Leafeon's eyes and inside ears are the same colour, but here I made the eyes lighter so I could use the darker green for his pupils.
These guys are generally a bit more on-model than I would probably usually draw them. Jolteon ended up being mostly just Donner, but it's mostly just in the face since I drew the fluff and neck ruff differently to how I draw him. Also I had a bit of an oh-no-she's-hot moment, which is ironically quite new for me. Normally it's only the male characters that surprise me, but at first I hadn't planned to make any of them explicitly male or female... but then I got to Flareon and... one thing kind of led to another? I thought giving it some subtle eyelashes might work with the look that was developing... then I sat back and was like, huh. She's actually really cute. But anyway, the way things turned out, I ended up with 4 males on the left and 4 females on the right. Unintentional, but it works.
I'm not sure which is my favourite... Flareon is a cutie of course, but Vaporeon is a cute boi too. And I really like Sylveon too, but I think my favourite part of her is the colour palette. Which is your fave? Leave a comment below, and remember to SMASH the like button. (cough) This was relatively simple and only took 2 days to make, but my hands hurt quite a bit by the end of it. I'm definitely open to doing more drawings with limited palettes like this, because limited palettes are a lot of fun.
Yes, I totally ship Leafeon and Glaceon.
