Another in a series of "example" pics I decided to do for each of the Mud Scout recruits. Basically they get one portrait of themselves in a clean uniform before they march off into "grounds of questionable solidity" and muck it all up :) Since Kira here has a penchant for losing her shoes in mud, I dug through my reference folder and found her a shiny, very low-sided style from Payless that is basically a hybrid moccasin/ballet flat.
Like the other pics in this series I did the shading in a soft-edged style, using about 32 layers of objects for the various shadows and highlights. Only the character was inked. The vegetation surrounding her was digitally traced over the pencil layer using the lasso tool. I don't know if I'll continue doing soft-edge airbrush shading with the actual "mud hike" pics since this process takes a long time, what with seperating, switching and masking amongst all the layers. Those may well be cel-shaded style, but each characters' "class pic" will be done like this.
Another thing I learned is that it's okay to draw large-eyed characters with oval pupils/irises. Previously I was drawing them perfectly round, which left little room for the "whites" of the eyes. Now I have one more "look" for my repetoire.
Brush-inked pencils combined with digital backdrop in Micrografx Picture Publisher 8. 32 object layers, 214 megabytes uncompressed. Original concept by

The miracle of layers :)
The character in the uncompressed file is a separate flat-shaded image under the shadows and highlights, so it was easy to simply turn off the layers above her, magic-wand her arms, cut away the excess mask, leaving the hands and wrists for a quick flood-fill.

True, I always make sure when commissioning group-shot pics to ask the artist to vary character poses for that very reason. Actually, that staff reminded me of the quarter-staves that all Scouts used to take with them on hikes and camps, years ago (when my dad was a Scout XD), for staff drills and to help them to measure distances for hiking (I never understood how, but it had something to do with the length of the staff and some awkward trigonometry stuff...). :)
At first, I thought that Kira was wearing loaders, but then I realised they aren't quite, because they have buckles up front.
Actually, I've made up my mind, as long as the Mud Scouts are still taking recruits, Roxy (my vixen) would like to sign up too please. ^_^

Heh, as common as those shoes were not too long ago, they don't show up on Payless' site anymore (which is why I save the photos whenever I run across something interesting). I did a quick look-up while writing up the description, and the closest examples that are there as of this writing are the American Eagle "Banks" and the Predictions "Alyssa".
Aw, all it takes is more drawing :)

That only takes you to the splash page. Look for a menu on the left, and click on Female. Then scroll down until you come to the thread Dirty Girls/Mud Play. It was in the second or third column, about half way down, last time I looked. Look for an [R] to click on to see the entire thread.

I'm kind-of holding off on new sign-ups till I can actually put out new content of the scouts actually doing their thing. As it is, I'm kind-of backed up (see my recent journal about 'abandoning content categories' to see what I'm dealing with). I can do pics like Mud Scout Jenora on commission, but even that would have to wait till the two commissions I have in-progress are done. Couple that with my work schedule detailed in the aforementioned journal, and you can see why my timeline is so stretched out.
I do intend to get to doing Mud Scout pics, as demonstrated by Patrol Leader Training, and when I can start putting the other characters in situations like that, I can start accepting new recruits once I've run through the initial batch. But it'll take a while--I mean, see how old this pic is that you commented under...
