I would personally use overlay first - with a kinda mid-tone color. so you get rid of that grey shading
turn it any color you want and just merge these layers
(now you have colored shading)
next I would use a multiply layer to add the colors. but you might wanna experiment with several layers and probably some overlay layers inbetween to get the right colors.
when using this method and color picking from a ref sheet I suggest making the ref sheet slightly lighter, as the multiply layer will darken the colors a lot - maybe in a way you don't want them. which means you have to work lighter from the beginning
