I've heard of different ways to add color. People very often cope with the previous "gradient map" if you are using a photoshop or adding layers on the "overlay" option or multiply. There are a lot of tutorials on youtube!

You could try the multiply/overlay options, then ply around with hue and saturation levels to get the colors you'd like.

And fantastic experiment by the way! Love contrast between the small detailing in the eyes and the soft brush of the fur. ^_^

Assuming you’re using Photoshop, I use gradient maps myself to either fix colors or on gray colors. I think it works well plus you can tweak them later if needed.

I would personally use overlay first - with a kinda mid-tone color. so you get rid of that grey shading
turn it any color you want and just merge these layers
(now you have colored shading)

next I would use a multiply layer to add the colors. but you might wanna experiment with several layers and probably some overlay layers inbetween to get the right colors.
when using this method and color picking from a ref sheet I suggest making the ref sheet slightly lighter, as the multiply layer will darken the colors a lot - maybe in a way you don't want them. which means you have to work lighter from the beginning

Yes, I ended up using a combination of several blend modes (overlay, multiply etc.) and a bunch of all sorts of additional layers. So yes, it makes sense :)

You may want to try multiply, as a color layer. Read some of the sites about people coloring historical B/W photographs, as some of them have excellent results, using a variety of layer types depending on the desired color and effect.
