While I’m not exactly sure about things at the moment, this particular piece feels as if it marks the end of the series of experimental, fragmentary poems I worked on over a number of weeks (i.e. early-to-mid 2019).
This one contains very little in the way of original words, but instead, is constructed from rearranged words taken from two old songs I’ve always liked, namely Grand Funk Railroad’s 1970 song: “Closer to Home/I’m Your Captain”, and Styx’s 1978 song: “Boat on the River”.
In the case of the Grand Funk song, further inspiration comes from some academic discussion I’ve come across, where certain arts students will ponder at length about just what the lyrics to the song might actually mean, and whether or not the captain in question is dying, or already dead during the final, orchestral, fade-out segment of the song. Hence the title: ‘Beyond the Captain’s End’.
O Captain! My Captain!
In addition to this, I have also referred to an online meme about ‘rustling someone’s Jimmies’.
Yes indeed, it appears that someone’s Jimmies have been rustled.
- “I’m getting closer to my home…”
