The Magnus in our Pathfinder game is being played by
Magnus but is not quite the same magnus. He's a sea otter, for one, where as regular magnus is a river otter.
This version of Magnus hails from Alkenstar - the city in the middle of the Mana Wastes. As far as he remembers he was born in the city sewers to some mutant creature and abandoned not long after. Before he could even walk, he had to learn to fight off the cockroaches and parasites attempting to make an easy meal of the infant creature. Almost entirely by luck and feral cunning he managed to survive until, eventually, he was adopted by a seemingly kindly old gnome. He was given clothes, taught to read and write and practice the basics of alchemy. But he was also kept in a cage when not working, becoming a freakshow attraction for the citizenry to gawk at for a copper.
This taught Magnus an important lesson: even those who care and help you will also do you harm, and you can trust or depend on no one but yourself.
After long, humiliating years the strange little fatling eventually escaped from his surrogate father, and made his own way in the world. Starting with the death of the old gnome, and Magnus's acceptance into, adventures with, and rejection from The Pathfinder Society. To Anizhar, most of Magnus' life is still a mystery, but he has accomplished many things in his short time.
Magnus is a talented Alchemist, able to mix potions and poisons, but also able to infuse his alchemical concoctions into the explosive rounds of his personal hand mortar. Magnus is rather... offputting to most people, and his upbringing has left him with little to no knowledge of social cues and how to properly conduct oneself in polite company. He can speak confidently about topics he is knowledgable on, and is logical to a fault, but he finds himself much more comfortable and natural speaking of contracts and formulas than hobnobbing and socializing. As a side effect, he is quite skilled at handling his money, and has proven fairly trustworthy as the treasurer of the fledgling city of Venture.
The Fatling's insatiable lust for technology has recently gotten him into trouble. While attempting to pry parts off of a fallen starship, he fell into the ship's power core and found himself shunted into the etherial plane. By the next day, when Anizhar and co. managed to find a cleric capable of casting Plane Shift to fish him out of it, they found that Magnus had been bestowed a terrible curse that caused time to pass at an accelerated rate for him, causing what should have felt like a day to feel like years. Over that span of time, he used everything he had available to himself - his mind, his alchemical skills, and his inexplicable ability to compress himself in ways creatures with a skeleton should not be able to - but nothing he attempted could free him from the curse, or the ghostly plane he was trapped on.
This taught magnus an important lesson: You can't do everything yourself.
