More from Wotan
…And before anyone gets any ideas, this piece is not about death. At least not directly, and at least not in any greater sense than the vague notion of inevitability that ultimately hangs over the life of every sentient, living being that has any sort of understanding of the concept.
This piece is more an exploration of various aspects of weariness, and of regrets, lost opportunities and failures that gradually seep out through cracks and under doorways, and perhaps fade and become meaningless over time.
It is of longing for things that can never be, things that never were, and perhaps the growing realisation that, even if: “All, what you gots, is all, what you gonna get.” you might nevertheless discover that there is still a bit more flexibility within those constraints than you might at first realise. Even better still, if you can figure that out before it’s too late to benefit from that knowledge.
Other influences within the piece include the song: ‘Cool Change’ by the Little River Band, and perhaps also some faded, disparate influence from the old Spiritual “Down by the Riverside”.
And in the end, this is not a song of defeat, but rather, is a work of gradual acceptance. Perhaps, even the smallest bit of hope.
