I have a theory, but it's not a very pleasant theory...
So. Page 91, we see what I'm assuming is a young Amon. This young Amon, perhaps separated from his mother due to being owned by someone else, tries to run away. His owner, who I'm assuming is the figure in the doorway, is not pleased and beats Amon.
Page 92. Amon tries to escape again, but is caught. He is a child after all, but anyways. His owner is even less pleased and beats Amon into unconsciousness, and drugs him with the Divine. This is how Amon got addicted in the first place, he was force-fed it. His owner assumed this would keep him in line...
Now, this page, 93. It didn't. Amon tries to escape again. He succeeds, but the aforementioned addiction has him returning. He needs a fix, he's going through withdrawl, any number of reasons come to mind. But with him having escaped, his owner was none too pleased and not having Amon around to take it out on, he took it out on the next best thing; his mother.
This results in Amon returning to see his mother's corpse. Whether deliberate or accidental, she died from her injuries and it broke Amon. This is why he's so afraid of the Divine plant back in Volume 1, why he panics when Dhaval makes a run for it, and why he has this need to give up himself for the benefit of others. He blames himself for his mother's death, since if he hadn't run away, she wouldn't have died. Whether or not he sees himself as worthless, I can't really tell given the mask he's put up quite often. But he certainly doesn't hesitate to put himself on the chopping block to keep everyone else safe. Whether it's altruism or low self-worth, I can't say for sure.
[EDIT] Just as I finish typing this, another thought hits me. What if the body in the final panel isn't his mother, but Kadar? Originally I thought he might not remember him, but there's the possibility he does, and he never knew how close Kadar came to rescuing his son until that very point, when he discovers Kadar's corpse tossed away in an alley like so much trash?

Your recaps of the drug induced dream are brilliant. I only have one thought/note...Kadar is running from the Sura clan in Legacy, and I canโt picture him leaving Ahsan. Plus, I donโt think Kadar really knew where to start looking for Amon. So I think you might be closer with the guess that it might be his mother, since Kadar was essentially drugged and kidnapped when Amon was still young. I still hope they find each other though. ๐ฅฐ
Am I right in remembering that Conviction has already been published in hard copy? I thought it had, but then I went to the start of this to see your cover page and it looks different. Was it changed later?
(This isn't meant as a complaint--I am just trying to make sure I have it straight)
